Hi, got a bit of a situation guy's as my 1999 targa will occasionnally not start. Its a 1999 targa MN6, Only mods are a Vararam with power duct and XS power cat-back.
When i put the key in, all gages seem to be fine, battery is full charge, but, when I turn the key, nothing happens... I just hear a loud click sound comming from the engine bay (i think) and all the gages sweep back down and up again as if I just put the key in....
I got it to start on compression the other day and it ran fine for 2 days but then again same issue....I'm a bit comfuse, did not have time to pull the codes yet but was wondering if this was a common condition, and if so... what is the cause...
I have read about the ''intellignet'' key that can sometimes cause this issue, tdo you think this could be my problem???
Thanks for the help !!
Oh and by the way I live in Quebecand its more or less C outside
Check wires at starter. Then, have someone to tap on the starter with a long rod as you turn the key. If it starts, the starter is the problem. If not, I sure others will chime in with suggestions.
Check the big red wire connection on the starter, they can corrode. You may have a bad starter solenoid.
C5's don't have an intelligent key, they have an imbedded resistor that the ignition cylinder contacts touch to read and the value must match the valued stored. Try cleaning the pellet in the key, or try your backup key if you suspect you have a problem.
I suspect you starter solenoid is having issues. If you can gain access to it, whack it with a mallet and see if the starter will then run. If so, then you need a new one.
Well finally got the time to check things out.. pulled a couple of history codes but only one came up as current: P1638 wich I found out to be related to the batterry...
Got under the hood and wiggled the wire going from the battery to the starter and VOILA... everything came alive !!!
So I parked the car in the garage and will get under th car to check all my connections and make them new again !!

On two occasions with friend's cars, that wire you're wiggling at the solenoid was loose, but tightening it moved the post in the solenoid and the bakelite was charred around the post. They both changed the starter and it fixed the problem. I have read that if you can find the solenoid you can pull the starter and replace just the solenoid. I think it was one of Bill Curlee's posts, but maybe try a search. Be careful tightening that connection, it is hot to the battery and there are a lot of close available "grounds" all around it and you can start quite a light show of sparks.
Disconnect the battery first.
