Default Fog Light Help Please

Hello everyone,

I have a 01 with the HID projectors and LED halo tail lights.
(all of which work correctly)

I noticed today that the fog lights were not working.

Fuse #6 is ok,
Relay #39 is ok,
I replaced both bulbs... still nothing...

Any thoughts?

Thanks! -J

Check your grounds? Pop the hood with the engine off. Turn the lights on, and hit the button. Do you hear the relay click?

Yes you can hear the relay click, I even tried swapping the relays.

Also, the indicator light in the fog light button does illuminate when on... but the fog lights will not turn on...

Thanks!

Do you have a ground tester? One of those things with a light and a battery clip? Pull the fuse and see if you are getting current through the fuse block. I just had my fun with this today.

No, but I can get one tomorrow.

Does the relay get power prior to the fuse?

This may wind up as a double post... I just got some warning message that I didn't have time to read before I was redirected...

Anyway, thanks for the link to the vid etc.

No, I don't have a light tester thingy, but I can get one tomorrow.

Does the relay get power before the fuse? or are they kinda two separate things?

Thanks! -J

Yes, relay gets power first. The side of the fuse closest to the engine gets power from relay. Power passes through fuse to side closest to passenger side of car, and then goes to lights.

Thank you!

With all the rain, I haven't had a chance to look at the car again, I'm hoping that I'll be able to check it out tomorrow.

Ok... finally had a chance to test the fuse area... with the fog light switch on and illuminated, I got no power from either side of the fuse with the tester.

I also tried to jump from the batt to the outer (fender side) of the fuse to see if the light would turn on which they did not...

So, what's next?

Thank you again! -J

Well,,, If your applying 12 VDC and the light isn't lighting,, You more than likely have a GROUND issue.

Go to the lights and do a continuity check on the BLACK ground wires. Ohm out the the black wires to a known good chassis ground spot. Should get zero (or very close to zero) ohms.

Yeah, I was afraid of that...

I'm going to have to see if I can find my tester...

Just out of curiosity, is there one place (or harness) where the lights ground?

Thanks!

Examine the schematic. You will see that both black wires go to Splice Pack 100.

ALL the front lights and accessories ground in SP 100.

From SP100 there is a single larger gage ground wire that goes to Chassis ground G-102

SP-100 is taped to the wire harness that transverses across the front frame header and it looks like this:

Chassis ground G-102 is attached to the chassis on a metal stud just behind the headlight assy:

The chassis ground block has internal parts (pins) that can get very corroded (trust me) and needs to be checked :

My ability to read schematics... much like most of my abilities, is questionable as best...

Anyway, I was thinking about this... shouldn't I have gotten power where the fuse is, even if the lights are not grounding?

Thanks -J

If the FOG LIGHT Led on the switch is ON,,, you have power to and out of the fuse....

Are you sure that you are using the tester correctly and is it working?

Am I sure I'm using it correctly... not at all...

When I connect the clip on the tester to the negative batt terminal and touch the tip to the positive, the tester does light up.

I've kept the clip connected to the negative terminal of the batt, so my assumption would be that if there was power at the fuse, it would go to ground and light up the tester, which it does not...

And yes that light in the fog light switch does illuminate when on...

Thanks! -J

Update...

I had been testing the wrong fuse...

So, there IS power going to the fuse... and I guess that brings me back to the grounds. Which I won't have a chance to check out until next week...

Anyway, thanks again for all the help, and I'll let you know what I figure out, or don't...
