For the price...it almost seems too good to be true. Do you think it's a waste of money?

I switched to a dual cone several years ago. It is a quality part made by a racing supplier. The best thing about it is when the time comes to clean your filters they come apart way easier than the 'too tight' fit of the other designs....no forcing parts in or out.

I see some dual cone setups that cost a couple hundred bucks. $60 with free shipping seems too good to be true. What's the catch here?

So it's more about the quality of the filters...not the quality of the hardware?

The metal tube itself is fine. I wouldn't put one of those filters on my lawnmower though, much less my Vette. You could always buy that kit and replace those filters with some K&N cone filters, and it would still be cheaper than most CAI kits out there.

Sounds like a plan...I think I might try that!

Questions I'd ask before spending even "to good to be true" $60...

The ad says it's metal tubing construction. It looks fine. The usual argument is that "heat soak" comes with metal tubing. Meaning the incoming air is heated even more from the temperature of the tubing.

Another argument from twin cone past threads is that "air turbulence" is caused by the dual cones. You know, the unsubstantiated stuff that comes up on the internet.

The ad says the filters are washable and re-usable. Are they oil/gauze construction? Will those filters (oiled or dry) keep the junk out of your motor that causes wear? Are off shore (since much less expensive is the question here) filters made to the same quality as K&N FILTERS, S&B FILTERS, AIRAID, or GREEN FILTERS? Are the filters for form or function? My guess is the former.

My bet is that intake is usually purchased for appearance and cost only. I doubt the dual cones will provide any improvement in horsepower or torque. The sound of rushing incoming air will be enhanced and increased sound is what most owners equate to more power (intake or exhaust).

Is your goal for form/appearance only? Is your goal to spend the least amount of money? For very little money, you can improve upon your oem intake to achieve more air into your motor. You can add an after market drop in filter, etc.

FWIW, the twin cone intakes are not "cold air" intakes, cooler air at most. Any intake where the filter(s) are not completely isolated from the hot engine compartment are not providing "cold air".

Is your goal to bring true cold air for improved breathing and performance? There are only a few true "cold air" intakes...VARARAM, HONKER and systems offered by HALLTECH come to mind. Their air intake is completely isolated from the heated engine compartment. That's function over form.

In the end, it's your choice, your car and your money...
Great post! I really am looking for a little performance boost...not appearance. Trying to keep it inexpensive though. I totally agree about isolating the filters. I had an enclosed setup on a BMW and you could feel the air temp difference between the compartments with your hand! Maybe this tubing could be wrapped in headers wraps to keep heat out, but the filters would still be sucking in engine compartment air.

What he said. I might also add that you can certainly get more benefit from the "zip tie" mod as well as get a better "used" intake from the forum, etc. Dual cone is not cold air and their performance benefit is minimal. This $60 price is too suspect for me and I would look someplace else. You dont have to spend a ton of cash to get what you want. I went the used route, put in a little elbow grease and a little time and I have this result. This is my personal choice and Im not selling you on what i have but this is just an example. Even if you wanted to go to a Vararam, and get one used, I think you'll come out better than this "deal". And certainly a metal intake/manifold is always a heat magnet. look for other options.

The PO installed something like that on mine. I don't care for it personally. I picked up a stock airbox with a K&N filter for 20 bucks from a member.

I ordered a stock sized K&N filter to replace the OEM for now. Supposed to work pretty good all things considered.

The heat that is transferred forward through the plastic air bridge and rubber couplers? This would barely warm up as it doesn't even come close to making contact with the engine, as there is quite a bit of plastic and rubber separating it. Heat soak is internet BS anyways, off idle air moving through the intake is traveling too fast to be heated anyways.

What, the same air "straightened" by the honeycomb shaped MAF screen put in specifically to combat "air turbulence"??

Those twin cone intakes actually cause a lot of turbulence where the two tubes merge. This disturbs the air flow and at times can mess with the maf a bit (de-screened maf's). I looked into them a few years ago when I first started modding the car. Better off with a big high quality filter and a large intake duct like a Vararam, blackwing or a power duct.

Look into AFE intakes. They are priced very well and have a very good large filter. I had one for a long time and made 450hp with it no problem. Just my $0.02 if youre looking to save a few bucks.

Sure. If you remove a screen any intake can mess with the MAF. GM engineers put them in there for a reason. People pull them and wonder why their car runs lean or rich at certain RPMs...

^^
Yeah but thats a popular mod as people try to get the most out of the car. At the same time thats why I went with a C6Z06 intake with a LS7 maf. I use a large honeycomb screen to smooth out the airflow, big difference.
