I talked to several big engine builders last summer when the time came to do my H/C/I. Katech even said it wasnt necessary. The stock Ls6 oil pump is very good out of the box. This is a bigger deal on 98-02 F body cars. To each his own though whatever you choose will be fine either way. Im a couple weeks away from getting mine fired up. cant wait!!
It is never a bad idea to improve upon the oiling system. Any "big" engine builder should have said that at the least. Is it needed? Probably not but when your adding a cam and rpms it would not hurt to do so... IT wouldnt be the first time an OEM oil pump failed. Is it gauranteed to happen? no. Its an insurance factor

I view it as one of those "While I'm in there" items. You're already 90% of the way there, right? IMHO- spend the $125 and replace it...
FWIW my girlfriends cam only car died a horrible death due to oil starvation...the oil flows front to back and up to the sensor then across the top...you see good pressure at the sensor and then..???? replacing cam bearings, cam etc is $$$$ get a Katech pump or go for teh Melling ...I got the Melling this go round...I see 80PSI at start up
