I sold a rear to a forum member and ups dropped it and broke some of the fins off it. question is can rear still be used if case is still intact or could fins be welded back on any help is appr. geo.
chris did show ups damage my fault for not thinking of putting extra ins. on rear they will pay him 100 for damage so he should be able to get them welded for that if all it is are the fins thanks geo.
Point out to ups what they did. They should be responsible.
Not for sure on that one???
If the broken fins are not laying inside the box, then UPS may not pay
the $$$.
They would suggest the differential was sent with prior broken fins.
I can say the rear was not damaged in any way when I shipped it so fins had to be in box, I would beleive they could be welded back on with a good alum. welder doing the work
Thanks George, I haven't had time to get on here b/c of work, I took the unit to some local weld shops and they said that because it is cast alu that i needed to remove the gears and carrier unit so there wont be any heat damage when welding. I think that my best bet would be to use heavy duty epoxy to attach the fins back on. they were laying in the bottom of the box when i pulled the rear diff out. looks like the box was ran over by a herd of elephants Im guessing that the fat lazy ups guy couldn't lift 70 lbs to the ground looks like it was dropped from 4ft. Im still weighting on UPS to Contact me on the claim i filed. That will probably go something like the way they ship goods. crash and burn. If you don't put a declared value on any item that is shipped there will only be a 100$ of ins. I have a 342 rear diff that was in my car, the barrings where c/v axles go in are wiped out b/c the guy i bought the car from replaced the clutch and didn't install the bolts in the rear diff mound so it bounced around. Im hoping that i can sell the rear diff i have as a good core to help offset some of the cost. I can post pics if any one is interested. I would like to thank George for a quick transaction he is a good seller, i just ran into some bad luck.

I am not a welder but I would fill the case with oil with a weight of 140 gear oil, that would help keep heat to a minimun I still think they can be welded back on with no damage to internals just have your welder take his time. also use a alum tig not stick if he can does not make as much heat let me know what happens chris
I received a differential a few years back that had a few missing/broken cooling fins.
None of the fins were broke close to the case structure itself.
I never had any problems without the missing/broken fins.
I'd be more concerned if the fins were cracked close to the case structure itself & look very closely for stress, vein crack/cracks leading into the case.
There is no way, I would have the differential, dismantled & re assembled to weld the broken fins.
Good luck.
Agree with BumbleZ. They aren't a structural part. Just there for cooling. You can't see them in the car anyway.
A photo would help, but if welding, you just have to get them back on, not fully welded.
Really hard to fill the trans full of gear oil, the back side is open when it's not on the transmission.
My A4 came via UPS. I had to be there to sign, and the guy basically threw it on my porch off the hand truck. It was WELL protected in the box, so no big deal. But they aren't gentle with anything, so one has to pack this stuff in accordance.
I understand your dissappointment. We want things to be right with our cars.
