I've got a 2001 6speed, bought it used so I don't know what if anything has been done as far as column lock problem repair or prevention. Can the LMC5 be put on top of any repair or prevention mods or can it be used only with the car being in a certain state of column lock mods?
Pull a Carfax report on it. Factory recall repairs should show up on the report.
Do the LMC5 it is the best fix on the market and will let you feel safe that your steering wheel won't lock up and leave you stranded like it did me.
The LMC5 is only $50 bucks with shipping, money well spent and headache well eliminated....
It should answer all your questions, well designed simple, safe, and it works like a champ. Also best support from owner & designer Richard...
2 kinds of vettes on the road, one that locked up, the other will lock up...
I've added this to next month's Vette spending budget. I know the original recall has been done on my car by the original owner, but with my luck it would seize up on me while on my way to AZ in the middle of summer at some back-hole west-Texas dive a few hundred miles from the nearest trustworthy mechanic.

lougars, it is normal for the steering wheel to lock up when the key is removed, that is the design of the column lock device. Now with that said, it is NOT normal to stay locked when you insert your key into the ignition, that is when the steering wheel should become unlocked, unless you have certain conditions occur, like incorrect Key or key without a correct resistor, or low battery, or damaged ignition key resistor pins. That's the problem. The LMC5 once installed, your wheel will/should never lock again period.
I have been reading about this steering lock thing and it makes me worried. Is there a way i can ckeck if it has been fixed by the person who owned it before me? i dont really want to waste my money on something that has been fixed. i have a 99 vette
Thanks 8VETTE7. It's an auto. And sorry for hijacking the thread. I Just thought that it odd that a guy with a 03 had his column lock with it off but forgot there was a difference between manual and auto.
If a CLB or LMC5 has been installed then the column will not lock if there is no key in the ignition. However for an automatic the column will NOT lock with no key in the ignition even if No CLB or no LMc5 is in the ignition.
Is your car an auto or a manual?
Also if the car is a manual and variation 04006C was done to the car the column also will not lock with no key in the ignition.
There are also other conditions that could result in the column being unlocked with no key in the ignition.
Complex ain't it???? That's why I said either LOOK or let the battery go low.....
Hahah WOW yes very confusing. But its a manual and it does not lock. I guess will just look ..... do i need to remove all the plastic around the steering column to see it ?
The squareish box with the single connector is the CLB. The other device is an unlocker used to unlock the column if necessary. The CLB if it is installed will be plugged into a female connector that is usually attached to the bottom of the dash.
Can't help with the LMC5.
Awesome thanks for all the help I will be checking this out this weekend. The last thing I need is for my steering wheel to lock up!!
To check for the LMC5, remove the kick panel in the passenger footwell and see if one of these is cable tied to the BCM. It wont take but a minute to check. Just pull the top of the kick panel toward you and it comes right out. The size of the picture is deceiving. The part that has LMC5 on it is only about 1 1/2" long.

well that sounds easy enough. I will have to check that out asap
Almost always starts with a battery problem. Weak or bad battery or loose or corroded connnetions including the one at the starter. The electronics in the factory column lock system is sensitive to voltage (not current) It requires greater than 12.5 volts measured at no load (neg battery cable disconnected) to properly operate the electronics. If the voltage is low many not so nice things happen like relays frying and/or the column remaining locked, fuel shutoff etc. Here's a pic of the column lock relay found on 99 through 2004 C5's that has fried due to low battery voltage:
Where is that relay? My car locked up the steering wheel once while out around town. It's a manual 02 Z06. Recall done but lock still operated. Pulled key and tried again and got it home. Ordered a CLB and went to install it today and it won't unlock. At least it is at home.
A little old but...got home from work and steering wheel locked up. I broke out the saws-all and cut the steel pin. Now with that said do i still need one of the electronic devices for some reason or am i now good to go?
