Default TPS problems and questions

So I'm curious as to what PSI the tire pressure sensors are configured to detect as "high".

I haven't had this car very long so I'm still working out a few bugs..

I have a 2000 coupe, after about 10 minutes of driving it always throws an alert that the left front is high... I reset it and it comes back. It is probably correct, it shows 42 psi when the message appears.

Another issue I have is sometimes, the right front will show that it is high, then when I cycle through the "gages" menu and it shows both front tire pressures, it has XXX in place for the right front, as it is not able to get a reading or it is not transmitting.

I am nearly certain that the right front one is bad but I wanted to ask some of you guys if you've had this happen.

The left front code I always get may be fine, maybe I do have a little too much air in there but I would just like to know what PSI these are programmed to go into alert mode at.

My tires call for 40psi and a maximum of 51. Cold they usually show mid to high 30s. What tire pressure do you guys normally run?

Thanks.

Thanks a lot I appreciate your feedback. I thought 40 felt too hard. That's actually what was in them when I brought it home. I haven't had a chance to drive it a whole lot but I figured that was too much or I wouldn't be getting so many alerts..

Thanks again.

Do what 8Vette7 said and you'll be fine. Just curious, where did you see "tires call for 40"? I've seen maximums on the sidewall (and that has nothing to do with recommended running pressure) but the door jam of the car says 30 psi cold. There have been several posting lately that a tire shop recommended running the maximum on the tire, and that just shows the ignorance of the tire store, but I'd be interested in where you saw the calling for 40.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO,, many people believe that they need 40-45 PSI for the car to perform!

28-31 PSI is IDEAL!

I run 28 in the rears and 30 in the fronts and get the best performance and tire wear. REMEMBER, as you drive the tire will heat up and you will see a 1-3 PSI increase.

I live in CT and drove to Bowling Green KY for the Cruise In a couple of years ago. When we departed CT, the temp was 50 deg. When we got to KY, the temp was 89 Deg. I had to pull over and let a LOT of air out of the tires. I could feel wvwry crack and crevis in the road!

On the way back,, I had to add air somewhere in VA as I started to get the low pressure warning in one tire. We ran into a snow squal in the 02 ZO6 with the Super Car tires. Talk about white knuckel driving!

Its always a balancing act!

TPM's use 42 as the max. So when you get to that pressure you will get the warning. Low pressure warning is 25 if I recall correctly.

When you see XXX for the tire pressures you can TRY retraining the sensors but likely they are the original TPM's in a 2000 and the batterys are failing. The usual life of the batterys is 6 to 8 years. Yours are probably on the way out at 12 years....
No way you should be running the tires at 40 psi cold and sounds like you need to replace at least one of the sensors - can't be long before the rest of them would be throwing codes if they are the original ones.
