Default Behavior of the Clock

I was out of my shut off 2003 convertible (with Window Valet; vide infra) and saw that the clock was continuing to display. I did not recall that this is normal. I got in, started the car, shut it off, and the clock continued to display. Don't remember this being normal. Opened the door, and the clock went off. Drove this morning and same behavior - clock stayed on after shutting the car off, until I opened the door. I don't remember any of this being normal, and I can't imagine how the clock ran for so long the first time I noticed it, after I was out of the car.

The car had just had the EBCM replaced, and they removed the Window Valet to do this, and left it out. I'm pretty sure I got home, shut the car off, and inserted the window valet. I didn't notice what the clock was doing at that time; it was only minutes later that I noticed it was still displaying, after everything else on the car had shut down. This history brings us back to the beginning of the post.

I know that it is not normal for the clock to continuously display after the car is off. Is it normal for it to stay on until the door is opened? That is to say: did I have a one-time glich, and now things are o.k.? Too much to hope for?

Many thanks,

Joe

Retained Accessory Power (RAP) Description and Operation

Retained Accessory Power (RAP) allows the radio and power windows to operate after the ignition is turned off. The power mode status is sent from the Body Control Module (BCM) through the serial data circuit. The RAP power mode is controlled by the BCM using an internal timer, ignition switch status, and door ajar switches. When the ignition is turned OFF, the radio and power windows will continue to function normally for a period of 15 minutes or until a door is opened.

So - that means that what I am seeing now is normal, but that would not account for the clock staying on long after I'm out of the car, so we would have to hope that was a one-time glich. It just kills me that I don't remember the clock staying on until the door is opened.

Can anyone test that with their car and let me know?

GM cars have been working like this for 15 years. You have two distinct situations in your original post:

1) Clock remaining on after you exit the car
2) Clock remaining on after you shut the car down, but clock goes off after exiting the car.

#1 is not normal, while #2 is normal, and consistent with the information I posted.

If you experience the clock remaining on again, after you have open the drivers door, try opening the passenger door. If the clock goes out with the passenger door open, you may have a bad switch in the drivers door.

Wait a tick - I think the Window Valet is involved. When I lowered my windows with the Window Valet today, the clock came on, and I had radio power. This is an option in the Window Valet that I had not selected when I first configured it, and I don't think it involves the RAP. I'm wondering if I should re-configure the Window Valet.

This has made me recall more of the history of last night. I'm pretty sure that after I got out of the car, I tested the Window Valet (which I had just returned into the OBD port) by raising and lowering the windows. This it would seem would turn the clock on, but I still can't explain how the clock stayed on when I got back into the car to start it and shut it off in my attempt to turn the clock off, unless we invoke the bad door switch again, which is not unreasonable.
