I plan on adding the Kooks 1 7/8" street headers soon, but what is the best thing to do with my factory cats. My understanding is that they are the most restrictive part of the system and would really dilute the gains from the headers and exhaust. I know that I do want cats, I don't want the smell. Should I cut the factory cats out of the system and replace with a couple high flow units and take advantage of the $400 Borla front resonator/H or x-pipe already in place, I like the sound. Or bite the bullet and buy the Kooks cat-ed x-pipe (another $900) and trash the Borla front resonator, ouch.
Here are my big picture plans any advice would be appreciated.
Kooks Headers, Kooks X-Pipe w/ cats?
ECS Blower Cam
AA Super Charger Kit 8-9psi
Methanol Injection
Thermostat
Differential Strut Kit
3.73 gears only for now, DTE Stage 2 when it breaks.
2900 Stall
Upgraded Brakes
I would if I bought their cat-ed x-pipe for another $800 on top of the $900 for the headers. I know my exhaust shop will have to do some cutting and welding if I don't buy the Kooks X-pipe due to their ball flange but if I am cutting out the factory cats and replacing with high flows to stick with the Borla front resonator it doesn't really matter. I guess I'm trying not to waist the Borla x-pipe that is on it but wondering if I'm being a penny wise/pound foolish.
get rid of them. even the hi flow cats are restrictive. I paid big bucks for mine and i blew them out on the dyno. the pieces just came out in chunks. had my tuner hollow out the cats and problem solved. it is nice to have the looks of having cats but really for big horsepower 500++ waste of money. dont use them.
I agree but what side effects can I expect. I do not have emissions testing where I live but as I understand it, the removal or gutting of the cats will cause a sewer smell in the car. I'ts a convertible and though it's not a daily driver I like to take it on long weekend drives. I don't want to deal with the sewer smell for two hours up the coast.

Wonder how they get 600+ on the ZR1 and are still EPA compliant?? If you trashed your cats with 500hp, you have other issues.
