Sure can't hurt. I would use anti-seize or synthetic caliper grease though. Also apply some on the backside of the hub bearing assembly where it meets up to the outer axle CV joint housing. Be sure that puppy gets torqued to the correct value. When you're done, also apply a thin film of AS on the threads that stick out of the axle nut. They rust like a **** without it.

Btw, these images are from an old thread about guys having clicking noise coming from the rear axles due to rust/corrosion. They lubed the areas you see, re-torqued the axle nut and cured the problem. As I said I would recommend synthetic caliper grease (very water resistant) or anti-seize compound and not WD40 or white lithium lube.
