I was under the impression the bags are all the same. What do you mean by controller?

From what i can see the part number is different but im not sure what the differnece actualy is. im talking about the triggering unit that needs to be replaced after the bags have been deployed.

OK, I've always heard them refered to as the module or brain box. Experiance with other GM cars is they are different from year to year and encrypted with the VIN# requiring a reflash at the dealer. If you are repairing a deployed system, the most cost effective method is sending them out and having them cleared. I have used myairbags.com a few times. $50 and it's good as new with no trip to the dealer.
