my vette with 4000 miles, auto, does not have performance axle, live in oklahoma, temps from 50-80 degrees, different types of asphalt,,, will not spin the rear tires. i run 93 octane gas. i read where many of you guys talk about lighting the tires up, but why wont mine. active handling mode can be off or on, doesnt matter. car has no mods. do i just have a slow car or do you think something mechanical is wrong. also, one more question. it appears the stock air box only gets air from 2 small holes in the top of the air box, the size of a golf ball. how does gm figure a car can run without a decent air supply. thanks for your replys.
The 2.73 gear stock auto car prolly will have a hard time spinning the tires. Mine didnt when i first got it, and now it still doesnt spin much until i hit the N20. First thing i would do is to get an aftermarket cold air kit. THere are many on the market that all work very similar, then add a programmer and low temp thermostat, and you should be running a lot better. i went from 13.7 stock to 12.8 with just the 3 mods i have listed in my sig
Also, it's fairly easy to pick up a 3:42 gear from a six speed guy upgrading. You can find them for sale on the forum for around $500, and figure another $300 or so for install. That would make a huge difference in fun factor. Oh yeh, you also need a programmer to make the speedo happy.
2.73 is called the gas sipper..gets great mileage , but performance is limited..I added a Z06 airbox and k&n filter...but you will have to do a regear to get what you want... :seeya
I can light up the tire with 2.73's that I have right now. With my mods and the traction control off the car will get sideways around town but as everyone has said so many times before 3.42 gears would be the way to go. I was wondering if I had a dealer reflash for 3.15 gears and went to 3.42's what it would do to my powerloader? Can I do this or do I have to have steve reprogram the PLII since it is already installed. :)
Bone stock most 2.73 cars really wont "light em up". They may get a little spin but unless you unload the rear going around a corner or somthing simlar they just don't make for very good smoke shows. :)
My T/A came with 2.73s and I couldn't even get a sqeak out of em. :(
Yep, I have 2.73s too and my car will spin the tires when starting from a dead stop, but not too much. FWIW the only performance mods I have right now are a Z06 air box cover and K&N filter (which did help a little bit). I have a set of 3.15s sitting in my garage right now that I bought off of Mike Mercury which are just waiting to be installed, but between now and then, if I really want to light the tires up, I just power brake. You can spin the tires all day long if you do this (though I wouldn't recommend it)!
Oh yeh, you also need a programmer to make the speedo happy.
If you're talking about speedometer "error" ; this is not a problem on a C5 when changing rear axle ratios. The speedometer accuracy is not effected.
Now, change the rear tire size... and that's another matter :)
thanks for all the replys, at least i know nothing is wrong with the car. i bought the car off the lot. if i had ordered it, i would have got a better axle, if availible on the auto. i am going to add the blackwing and the hood seal while it is on sale. i just cant see how the car can possible get enough air with the closed air box it now has.
