Default Transmission Noise except 4th

Im getting a really loud whine in 1,2,3 and 5,6 until going 75-80. 4th doesnt seem to be affected at all. I noticed the whine quiets down after rolling hills. Do i just need more soundproofing or transmission service? Just wanted to ask the experts and do it right.

Thanks

Have you checked the fluid level?

If I had to guess maybe 300 miles at most? Seems to be related to hot weather conditions. Also when its really hot above 104F with the AC on the car has a hard time idling. It chokes down to about 650 rpm

If noise is coming from front by the shifter I'd say throw out bearing. Mine does the same

OOh that's not good, I just had the exact same thing a month ago. Pretty soon the whining turned into a tap that turned into shrapnel. Pretty sure you have a bad cluster bearing that is causing the whine, you don't get it in fourth because it is on the mainshaft and doesn't run off the cluster. Thats how it was explained to me. Get it checked asap, make sure your fluid is full, if it is then you need to get the trans taken apart before serious damage is done. I wasn't so lucky, needed a new trans. Good luck.

That was my first thought as well. 4th gear isn't a "gear" per se. It's a 1:1 shot straight through the tranny.

Thats right, 4th goes through. Here's an easy check. Stick your head underneath the back of the car the first thing you see is the diffy. Attached to it is the trans. If their is Any sweating or fluid on it or looks like there once was oily substance than you should have it serviced right away because you have a leak. Often times it is the seal for the input shaft bearing.

Don't run it too low or the bearing will break up causing a real mess and the need for a rebuild or replacement.

Note that If you are on a curve with enough lateral G, what little lubrication you have in the trans will not be where it is needed. It will be on the side of the gearbox.

Best thing to do is baby it from 1st to 4th and keep it in 4th until the leak is repaired and fluid level is restored. If you are a daily driver I would get it done soon before too much bearing wear develops. Don't apply much torque onto the trans. easy on the pedal.

Sounds to me like a new front seal and input shaft bearing for a proper repair. Quick fix is adding fluid which just postpones the inevitable.

Get it repaired before it grenades. If it grenades, you could mess up the casing beyond the ability for a new bearing and seal to do their job, which would mean a replacement trans

You most likely need transmission service, as in pull the box and rebuild it. More soundproofing might keep you from hearing it, but it'll still grenade.

First check your fluid level. If that's ok, it's most likely the head gear (input shaft) and the cluster driven gear are damaged due to overheating. There is a chance of having a bad cluster bearing but most likely it's the gears. It's time for a new/used transmission. Cost of replacing the needed parts will be more than buying one used. Good luck.
