Default rear end noise, help!

Crusing on interstate and high pitched howling started. Clutch in noise stops. Happens during acceleration and cruising speeds. is my rear end about go or is this trans issue?

02 6spd. Basic bolt on parts.

Id say its not in the rear end due to the fact that its still turning no matter if the clutch is in or out. Could possibly be something with your clutch but Im not too knowledgeable about this stuff. Did you try putting your trans in neutral and revving the engine with the clutch out and again with the clutch in to see if the noise is still there?

I think its the diff. Mine whines like that too. Only on acceleration and cruising. Doesn't necessarily mean anything dangerous is happening. Just the way the ring and pinion are meshing.
Might get it checked out though since its just starting. I don't mind the noise, so its staying that way in my car.
Gear whine seems to be a common problem in 3.42 cars.
