My brand new vette seems to be leaking a good amount of dark grey grease from behind the left rear wheel. Very thick coating inside the polished alum wheel, and some bib blob-splats here and there, and even splatter line inside wheel well.
It goes in for service tomorrow.
But do any of you have an idea what this is and where it is coming from.
I wipe it all off and next time I drive it it is back in quantity.
That happened to me. I punctured the shock boot when lowering the car back down to the rear axle while installing T/C and 3:73 gears. It spews thick grease all over inside of rim and will until it runs dry. If that is it, the boot will have to be replace and regreased.
I had the same problem with the dark grey grease on the inside of the wheels.
When changing my rear shocks I apparently punctured both of the outer cv boots. It was a $350 fix through the dealer.
Yup, its the CV boot. My brand new Z06 had a razor type cut in the left rear boot probably from installation at the factory. You need special tools to change it out and the shop book allows 4 hours for the job. My dealer did it in about 2 hours. Be very carefull when dealing with the grease, the replacement boot came with grease which warned that it was very toxic and could cause liver damage among other things....good luck
So that's where that grease is coming from! :cuss I thought I was missing some crud when washing my wheels but thought it was strange only the left rear was collecting the grease.
Does anybody know if this repair is covered under warranty? I have 33K miles on my C5 so I could be running dry by now. :mad
I don't crawl under cars so well anymore but I used a flashlight to check around the CV boots. There is nothing noticeable when viewing from the back of the car and my grease is a thin strip around the center of the wheel, nothing spectacular.
If indeed I had such a factory caused razor blade cut in the boot as mentioned above by driving 33K miles I may well have run the CV joint dry and ruined it. :mad
Unless it can be shown that I drove over something on the roadway I don't see how GM could refuse the repairs under warranty.
I noticed some of this grease in my left rear wheel as well and initially just thought it might be some factory grease but it sounds like I may have something to get looked at. Is this a common problem? Not very encouraging if it is...
I am taking my car to the dealer tomorrow and will try to find any other info I can...
I just noticed something interesting. We are all happy and fortunate to have corvettes. But ONE guy on this thread has a corvette AND lives in friggin Hawaii for god's sakes!!!
Yes, maybe, but it must be a lot harder to find that nice long deserted stretch of road with no turns for 5 miles and perfect asphalt...
Hawaii is a great place to live but I love the fact that we folks on the mainland can get in our vettes and drive 500 miles somewhere if we feel like it... To each their own I guess.
Getting grease in left rear wheel looked at by Chevy dealer tomorrow morning. I'll follow-up with any updates I get.
Ok, had my two week old car at the dealer since this morning and here is what he told me. The black grease is from a damaged rear axle boot that was defective from day one. Since the grease is spraying on the inside of the rear wheel, including possibly the brakes, he can't let me drive it for safety reasons.
Of course this would not be a problem except he won't know until next week when he might be able to get a part because they don't have any in stock! Two week old car, I was out last weekend so this is the first full weekend with the Vette and I can't even drive it or know when I will get it back! :mad :cry :mad :boxing

Believe me there are plenty of nice stretches of roads here in Hawaii. I also have the benefit of being able to drive my car 365 days of the year, no winter storage for me! :D
