Re: ??? about replacing M6 trans with M12 (JS2 FST)
My guess is you would just plug the hole, if you can't use it.
As for fluid, go with the fully synthetic stuff, (like Redline) -- it's supposed to be far superior than non-synthetic
Re: ??? about replacing M6 trans with M12 (MitchAlsup)
We already needed to replace the Centerforce clutch and the stock transmission because the clutch wasn't disengaging all the way and tore up the transmission. We already have the Z06 trans and a new McCloud clutch and flywheel. We were waiting to get the slave cylinder when we were ready to replace them all, but the slave cylinder went out on me this morning. No more waiting now. So I need some answers quick. The car is in the shop now.
There have been a number of posts recently, on this forum and others, about this issue.
A 3.90 rear will give you the closest match in ratios to the Z06 standard with an MN6, the 3.73s will not.
However, people like c4c5specialist have posted that installing a 3.90 is highly not recommended -- from Gertrag on down, because of output shaft, case fitment, and durability issues. Here's the quote:
"As for the 3.90 or 4.10. After a number of emails back and forth with the Getrag engineers back when the 3.90 was first introduced, the following was sent to me:
"Getrag uses a different carrier with the 2.73 rear axle, than the 3.15, 3.42, and the aftermarket 3.73. This is due to the fact that we could not reliably install these ratios, and hold to durability standards demanded by Getrag, and Corvette. 3.73 is the highest ratio that Getrag could utilize, and not compromise durability with high horsepower usage. This is why we manufacture this ratio only, and nothing higher, as a factory assembled unit."
Regarding pricing, you can get a brand new Z06 transmission from http://www.gmpartsdirect.com for $2,495; sell the old one for say, $1,500, and for a thousand dollars you have the same ratios as a Z06. And with the same horsepower, the same acceleration.
Re: ??? about replacing M6 trans with M12 (gtsyellow)
the m12 can take more abuse than the m6 if you plan on making a serious amount of power the m12 is worth it
Actually the MN6 is stronger than the M12 because the M12 has a wider ratio and can't sustain as much torque. I'll find the thread that explains it better for you in a bit...
Re: ??? about replacing M6 trans with M12 (C5Noir)
Here we go (quoting TAL): The reason the MN6 has a higher tq multipication is that it is a narrower geared (ie 2.66 vs 2.97) trans which means it can take more torque.
Whenever you 'spread' the gears out you most likely loose torque capacity.
So you could say the MN6 is a 'close ratio' trans and the M12 is a 'wide ratio' trans.
However; the term 'wide ratio' would fit the 3.36 geared trans that I had listed above from the Tremec site. This trans was used in the 93 Chevy Camaro Z28 (or Pontiac V8 twin) with the 2.73 rear end gear. This all but disappeared after 94-95 when the 6-speed beacame standard with 3.23-3.42 rear gears. Thank gawd!
