Car lurches and engine dies

ENGINE STALLING- July 22, 2012The (2001 manual trans) car ran perfect earlier in the day. A few hours later, and after a rain storm, the ignition answered with a couple of clicks, which is usually the dreaded sound one hears when a battery gasps it's last breath. The hood was down, and nothing critical could have gotten wet. However, the electrical system was dead to all functions, ie. interior lights, radio, door locks, trunk lid and everything else. A fully charged portable battery pack had no effect either. The system remained dead.
Today I decided to give it one more try, when I was greeted by a couple more clicks, before the engine roared to life. I let the engine idle for a while, and all seemed well.
However, when I tried to drive, the car lurched foreword a few feet, before the engine died. I was able to park the car again with repeated lurching, and repeated restarts. (Water in the gas comes to mind immediately, but that won't effect the electrical system.)
If anyone had a similar problem, or can offer a possible answer to what will cure the problem, it will be much appreciated, before I surrender my wallet to the local GM Dealer. (Who otherwise be nice people, for all I know.)
Regards, GRT

Sounds like a security issue that enables the 2 mph fuel cutoff.
