I know this topic must have come up before. I have an 01- 6 speed and the rear end has started leaking. I have it on a lift and it seems to be coming from the vent tube but I am not sure. Has anyone experienced this problem and know what the fix was.
A rear diff leak is very common. There are usually 2-5 posts per week with someone having one here. The O-ring flattens, its a cheap part but time consuming to replace... I think it books 6 labor hours if I remeber correctly, they keep my car overnight.
If it's coming from the vent tube, have your dealer check for an overfill condition, and if it is too full drain off 4oz. of fluid from "full".
This was the fix for mine after replacing two left half-shafts, the left axle seal twice, the left housing cover O-ring once, and two attempts of relocating the breather tube with hose extensions to the right side of the car!
Have your service rep call the factory technical support line for specifics, but draining some oil might save you a LOT of grief! :yesnod:
My 2000 mn6 rear appeared to be leaking on the drivers side after a 180 mile run averaging 90 mph on a 100 degree Texas day.I replaced it with Redline and it runs cooler and no more leak!$7.95 a quart vs. the stock lube which is an unbelievable $30 a qt.Try it before you rip apart your C5!! :D

In the meantime I heard about different causes (accepted by dealers/GM/warranty):
- diff box overfilled, out of the factory
- seal flattens out, mainly at drivers side
- vent doesn't work correctly
- porous diff box
Besides that, under hot conditions some spraying out of the vent tube seems to be
normal.
Regarding oil level/lubrication there should be nothing to worry about. I haven't yet heard
about the loss between the maintenance intervalls becoming critical. I checked mine on a
regular basis after the first spots appeared and I actually found, that the level changed
around ~2to5mm per 10k miles, which is "within the limits" as a technician told me.
They replaced the seal twice, second time using the special sealer as recommended by
GM (anaerobic sealer GM #105942), but after some thousand miles the weakness started
again.
At the moment I would not let them replace the seal, but wait because there is a new
type of seal announced to the end of this year, which should address the problem!
Thanks everyone for your input. I think I'll start by replacing the fluid with the Redline ( where can I purchase it and how much do I need) and keeping the level a little low. It appears to show up in the hot weather. I do not want the dealer working on it at this time.
A new seal at the end of the year? Hmmm...mine's at the dealer now getting a new seal...there was no way I could drive it anymore, it seemed the seal failed circumfrentially, and the trans oil was staining the gearbox from top to bottom. Hope this one lasts longer! :mad
When the differential was leaking (@3000miles)on my 2000 hardtop, drivers side axel area.
The dealer tried to tell me it was normal. They replaced o-rings and it leaked again.
(Ever get the look at a GM dealership when you are discussing a problem, the tech writer looks like a deer in your headlights...Glassed over eyes.)
I got on the phone to GM insisted that a new differential be installed if they were making questionlble quality products.
The dealer told me there were no rear differentials available.
I also put them on notice that Lemon Laws said 3 strikes your out, buy back the vehicle.
24 hrs later(A saturday) there is a new differential being installed in my vehicle.
Tell GM you never have these types problems with your Toyota or Honda. Let your engineers do there jobs correctly.
Quit having bean counters running your R&D/ engineering depts.
Or GM will go the way of the EDSEL........
Market share is down to what?
Quality LONG term Quality is whats needed.........Not to get by warrenty quality.
Everyday drivers are best Toyota and Honda's.Easy 200,000 miles and still hold up strong.
Save your emails I love my vette..But as far as I'm concerned it is the best GM has.there is nothing else I would buy from the general and the quality issue still lingers.
Mr. Lutz I drive 60,000 miles a year.......I purchase vehicles every 2-3 years
I have 3 kids........6 vehicles in my driveway.
It is the transmission seal as mine is going in next week for repair. They said In Tampa it is normal and nothing I had done. About a days work. Good Luck.
Big Daddy and all who are waiting for a fix...
Call me unlucky...(Escalade's in the shop for Firestone's delaminating-non recall tires, been fighting the dealer here for over a week, it has sat, and I threatened them repeatedly until they fixed them), but now the Vette dealer calls, and the input shaft seals on the Vette are bad as well, so instead of a 6 hour job, yet unfinished after 2 days, it is an 11 hour job, and additional parts won't be in until thurs...car unready till Friday. The only car we have now is the STINKING HONDA, and it's running like a top after new pads installed by yours truly! I won't even be able to enjoy my vacation...all I can say is those things better be ready Monday morning, or I'm going nutso. :smash: :mad :boxing :cry
I have a '02, A4 w/590 miles going into dealer for the third time for the same
annoying problem. I love this car and hope they get it right this time. But honestly, I'm glad the lemon laws exist...to keep the pressure on to get it right. From what I've read, this has been a common problem for some time.
GM- are you listening? :cry
Dave, what dealership are you using? You can PM or email me if you want and let me know. gmblack3@hotmail.com

What??? 3 times and only 590 miles? I'd be thinking hard on using the lemon law to your favor.
It's hard to belive that this problem still exist after years of production on the same model. I decided to order an 03 and I hope that this problem will be a thing of the past. I will be going from a Mag Red to a Yellow.
With only 600 miles on your car I would suggest you use the lemon law as soon as you qualify according to the law in your home state. :cuss :bs :nonod:
