2004 C5 29000 mi - I went on an extended trip (disconnected my battery) and when I came back and connected the battery and fired her up, I noticed my check engine light and my TCS and ABS lights were on. I checked the onboard diagnostics and got the following: PCM P0856 HC, TCS NOCOMM, SDM U1040 HC, Radio NOCOMM.
I've checked the codes as best as I can determine it all means that I've got a communication issue and my sh*t won't talk to other sh*t... For all I know, some mouse ate through a wire somewhere (car was garaged).
I really hate these electronic systems.
Any ideas?

Charge the battery fully, clear all the codes and see what comes back. Likely the battery is very low.
About the only thing I did when I bought this car was to replace the battery. It's about 6 months old.
I've been driving the car for 2 weeks and it cranks with plenty of power. I have, however, cleared the codes a couple of times and they come back as soon as the key is turned back on. (Thanks for the ideas - I will re-check my battery cables but they looked great when I reconnected them).

I've discovered the threads on "absfixer" and I'm thinking I need to send this unit in... Now for a really dumb question... Where is it located on my 2004? I see something in the front near the right headlight. Is that it?
Better read the info on the ABSFIXER web site at to what codes he will service the unit on. You don't have the code he will reapir C1214. At least that is not listed in your first thread.
EBCM is located on the frame on the drivers sidebetween the alternator and radiator.
With your loss of communications I suggest you start by examining grounds. Here are a couple of threads to get you started:
Additionally there is a ground wire (black if I recall correctly) in the connector that plugs into the EBCM and the attachment of the EBCM to the frame also serves as a ground.
Finally there are 3 fuses in the engine compartment fuse box that are to the anti-lock brakes. I don't remember the numbers off the top of my head so look them up in the owners manual. Check those.
Thanks... Probably won't get a chance to work on this for several days but here's another question... Why should I even bother to fix this? It's kind of a blessing for me because I really don't like traction control or ABS brakes and those are the only systems I can see that are not functioning. Even the cruise control works so maybe I should just leave it alone?? In fact, if just cutting the ground wire to the ECBM can shut these systems down, maybe a custom mod could simply be to install a switch in that ground to disable those systems when one wants to have some fun..

Well, if you enjoy hitting the reset button to clear a bunch of DIC messages, EVERY time you start the car and lots of times in between, well have at it. The traction control already has a switch to turn it off, and the brakes, I can't imagine why you'd want the wheels to lock up. You enjoy flat-spotting the tires? Btdt years ago, spent 20k miles with thump, thump, thump... That was fun...

I'm old....
I learned to drive in ice and it's instinctive for me to pump the brakes when they are locking up or even when my brain thinks they might lock up. ABS just messes with my mind, that's all.
So far, I only see one "reset" press of the button when I drive the car. It never bothers me after the initial start but I can see where even that might get old after a while.

As a good example of how annoying that can be, my brother just bought a 2012 Ford Escape at the end of last year. Every time he gets in and starts the car, he has to take it OUT of 4wd. I'm sure that's Fords way of helping the oil companies! Drives him mad having to do that all the time. Now, that's not just a light, I understand. But, same principal...
I'm getting ready to buy 4 new tires (that I really don't need) just so I can get my new wheel sensors put in and stop with that $*&% message about the tires every startup. And I've only dealt with that for a few weeks.
