I just swapped a C6 shifter into my 01 Coupe M6. It works pretty good and is much more comfortable than the OEM shifter...however the throw seems too be asymmetrical, shorter towards the top, longer towards the bottom....to the point where it seems to barely get fully into 2nd.
Question: Can this be adjusted at the shift rod if I loosen the set bolt and slide the rod back a little?
I do not know about the shift rod, however, the shifter box alignment can cause exactly what you are describing. I do not know what the "perfect" alignment is, so maybe someone can chime in on that. 1mm one way more than the other makes a big change in how it shifts.
Shouldn't it align perfectly when the alignment pin is pushed in?
Are you referring to the neutral pin on the front (toward engine) of the box? No, not necessarily. If you pull loosen the two box bolts with the neutral pin in, it is supposed to be centered, but if your central seal, box bushings are bad, or something else is not perfect with the trans elsewhere, it will not necessarily center itself dead-center.
Ok, I have been driving the car with the C6 shifter for a few days. After a little time it seemed to smooth out, and was shifting really well. Then today, I start getting occasional grind/pop out of gear behavior in 1st and R. I have not tried to adjust anything to date. The C6 shifter was brand new with a brand new base. It went in in the same position as the old one. The mount bolts are not totally centered, the shifter is slightly back in the mount, but in the exact smae position as the old one.
any thoughts on the popping out of gear thing? Anyone have any advice on adjustements. Any and all comments are appreciated!
Thanks so much! This describes my exact problem. I'll go back in and try and adjust it this weekend. Until then she's in the garage and I'm in the wifey's Caddy!
That was a most informative thread! Saved in bookmarks! I adjusted the shifter yesterday following the procedure posted by ExtremeVette. I Used the "flashlight" method and it worked perfectly! Everything torked down snug and she shifts nice and crisp with no restrictions! ..and I learned how to properly adjust the thing and how it all works! So to all who contributed to that thread!
