Mine's not too wide, is it?
No, but it's still not long enough. I'm not impressed yet. :)

Default This is silly

Flame ON

Honestly I think 90% of the sigs out there are ego strokes anyways. I've seen a few that are 850 KB in images... Sheesh! On a dial up modem that's 5 min to download that one image. I'm sitting on a T3 here at work (sometimes even an OC48), and the size bothers me (not because of the download which shows very little consideration to those on dial up), but because I have to scroll for a few hundred lines to get past a sig to some guy who's entire post is

" " followed by a 60 line sig. Sheesh!

Flame Off.

Agreed ... I think that Sigs sould be a link to a website ... or just some text or a small banner pic like Mean Green 2000's

or we could try to conform to the nerd standard, which is four lines of text that are 60 columns or less. actually, in recent years, among the uber-nerds, the sig standard has even been gradually cut down to three lines of text only that are 40 columns or less.

but, on the other hand, this isn't email. this is an interactive entertainment and information site that has multimedia and modern high bandwidth features. heck, if i was on a dialup modem, i'd be pissed about all the advertisements and banners. of course, those ads and banners are what keeps corvetteforum running at all, so i wouldn't complain. i think the real solution, which has already been implemented, is for each person to go into their preferences and disable images and/or signatures. the option is already there, so i really don't think anybody has a right to complain about graphics and how long the pages take to load. just go into your preferences and disable them! Troy has already given you the tools you need to effectively browse this site in an enjoyable fashion - even if you're on a low bandwidth connection! i really think some people just like to complain. and i think some people are simply pissed because they don't have T1 or dsl access. why make the rest of us enjoy this site LESS because you don't want to see images, or movies, or flash, or any of the other bandwidth consuming things that make the Net so cool? if you don't like it, or if your Net connection is slow, then just go into your preferences and turn it off!!! don't try to convince the rest of us that we need to join you in the Stone Age (or out in the boonies where you can't get high speed Net).

this solution seems *really* simple and straightforward to me. please tell me what i'm missing.

just one more thing ...
i have spent alot of time thinking about this very issue today, and really the only complaint that i think is justified in any way is when somebody posts 20 pics in one post that are 1800x2400 and 5 MB each. pics like that would force me to scroll left to right even i had 1200x1600 resolution on a 24" $5000 flatscreen monitor with my browser maximized. even then though, i still have the option of turning off images, or avoiding that thread the next time, or just looking at the situation realistically and admitting that it's only a post on corvetteforum, and that i shouldn't get all bent out of shape over it and feel the need to call the person who posted the pics a jerk and an idiot.

i'm really starting to think that all of the people who complain about signatures and pics must be related to my wife. she complains about being too hot if the thermostat is set to 75, but then she complains about being too cold if i turn it down to 74. of course, if she is the one who turns it down to 70, she feels perfect. i swear! some of you people are related to my wife. she is really going to be elated when i tell her that i found her long lost relatives!

tattooed,

two things..

a) not everyone who reads the forum is registered, and so they can't go into their preferences and change the options. I get complaints all the time from people who I send links to. (i.e. "Geez, what's with all the huge sigs??")

b) the forum FAQ has had limits on sigs already. 400 pixels by 150 pixels, or something similar. If eveyone paid attention to that, there wouldn't be much complaining going on. It would be useful if that information was on the page where your edit your sig, because I have a feeling most people never venture into the forum FAQ. :)

I personally like seeing everyone sigs. But there are too many of us that go way way overboard with it.

I think we should just cut them out and give everyone w/ 100 posts or more, an avatar ... eh ?
Bliss,

If we carry that logic (sic) a little further we could also take everyones logon name away and give them a number. We could also ban talking about the color of our cars and then ban talking about mods.

I enjoy peoples sigs and know a little bit about them because of what they choose to put in their sig. It's called personallity.

I agree they should not get out of hand and should comply with the rules..but banning them, no way!

there, I even edited out the :bs stuff in the text

true, true. you have a very good point. i still think though that the forum should be designed to best serve the interests and needs of those who are registered members, rather than removing features, functionality, etc for non-members who happen to be occasional visitors. bottom line though, and i'm sure you agree with this too, is "everything in moderation" - especially in sigs and pic sizes. also, as mr mojo mentioned, my sig only needs to be posted once in a thread.

b) the forum FAQ has had limits on sigs already. 400 pixels by 150 pixels, or something similar. If eveyone paid attention to that, there wouldn't be much complaining going on. It would be useful if that information was on the page where your edit your sig, because I have a feeling most people never venture into the forum FAQ. :)
i'm glad you pointed that out - i had not read the faq, and i saw what you are referring to - http://www.corvetteforum.cc/forumhel....htm#Signature
"How do I setup a signature at the bottom of my posts?
You can setup your signature in your profile area. You may use many things, including: a link to your website, details about your car, and a photo of your car. If you choose to put a photo of your car in your signature be sure that the photo is of a relatively small size. It shouldn't be more than 15k in size and no wider than 400 pixels."

bottom line here is that Troy is the boss and i'll comply with his requests, or with the requests of whoever he chooses to represent/moderate the forum.

I personally like seeing everyone sigs. But there are too many of us that go way way overboard with it.
yeah, agreed. i like seeing all of the sigs too. i really appreciate you and mr mojo taking the time comment (and to slam me ... heheh). i'll do my part by modifying my signature.

Here ya go. I made it slightly smaller in pixel size, and a lot smaller in file size (down to 25KB):

And if you want one even shorter:
