Default heavy shifter

hi all, i test drove a 98 coupe today that I am picking up next week.

The 2 things that struck me were 1) the power! amazing torque, amazing speed - it was so fun. But then there was 2) the shifter. So heavy and rough I missed gear a couple of times and you really need to yank it around.

I know the components must be heavy to handle the power but is this normal? Is there a common upgrade?

any info would be much appreciated.

The shifter should be fairly smooth. Not Honda smooth but it definitely should not be heavy or rough. When I first test drove my 03, I was actually surprised at how easy the shifting was. I was expecting a heavy clutch and notchy shifter. Mine does not have any of those conditions.
Do you know if it has the OEM shifter or aftermarket? Has the tranny fluid been changed and if so, what type? Have there been any mods to the tranny? What is the condition of the clutch and clutch master cylinder and fluid. There may be several reasons that yours is not as smooth and easy as it should be.

Might you be referring to the notchiness, the force required to "click" it in and out of each gear? This would be exaggerated if it's a shorter shifter, too. If it's this notchiness that you're experiencing, there's a mod for that (antivenom). If not, then Cybermind's on the right track.

Hey guys, thanks for the reply.
Everything is stock. And I was actually surprised by how light and smooth the clutch was. The shifter, however, was just plain rough. Definitely beyond a 'notchy' feeling. I'll check about fluid but I doubt it has been changed, the car only has 80,000kms on it.

In the meantime I'll look into this antivenom thing.
