crank case sensors normally deal with timing....with efi it is not easy to determine top dead center....using measurements via crank case sensors off the engine crank will determine advance or retard as per rpms, speed, etc...2000 coupe that when car is going slow, say 30 mph, and rpms are low (around 1100 down to 800 rpms) and you step on the gas the car will bog, almost stall and deliver a backfire "pop" from up around the headers and y-pipe....very disconcerting...if you leave it in 3rd gear and the rpms are a bit higher it will not bog down....if you are travelling at say, 60 mph, down the highway and get on it, it will fly!!!

Above the starter on the passenger side of the block, and of course there's the cam sensor at the rear of the block, behind the intake manifold, next to the oil pressure sender (assuming you have an LS1 or 6).
Based on your symptoms it sounds like you're looking at the right things (timing related). Check for broken/burned/damaged wiring, etc for starters.
