I get the column lock & pull key message once in awhile but the car still runs & functions as normal. The column does not lock when the key is out of the ignition so the previous owner must of had some recalls done or removed the locking pin. I do not get the 2mph shut of or nothing. When I first got the message I thought I was screwed but the car still runs fine. Thinking of getting the LMC5 just to get rid of the messages & for peace of mind.
Your profile says the car is an A4. So assuming that the column lock recall service was done to the car then the column would NOT lock with NO KEY in the ignition. A4's got the factory lock plate replaced with a smaller diameter that the lock pin cannot intercept so the column is physically incapable of locking. As to why the Pull Key message sporadically, there are a number of possibilities. The battery may be weak or going bad or the cables loose or corroded. The MOST COMMON cause for column lock symptoms are battery related. You may have grounds that have corrosion on them and intermittantly cause problems.
The BCM on some early cars often had sporradic issues with the column lock system and bogus messages. I have an acquaintence that has a 98 that regularly gets the pull key message and he has tried numerous things to rid the car of the problem all without success.
As far as not experiencing the 2mph fuel shutoff, it's likely that the speed for the fuel shutoff has been set to a high number.
Perhaps worth a try with an LMC5 but there have been a number of posts recently where the car has one installed and still gets the pull key message at times. Here's a link to a recent post concerning that:
The reality is that you may well be stuck with the message coming on for no understandable reason.
It could be battery related it is the same battery I purchased the car with. I keep it on a maintainer when not in use but the battery could be getting tired & in need of replacement. The pull key message does not really bother me as long as the car still runs as normal. Thanks for the info.
