I was driving this morning. I got on to the interstate and got up to about 75mi/hour in 6th gear. I started hearing a whining, a sound I have never heard. I got to my destination, and when I parked, I noticed a "rattling" sound under the shifter when the car was in neutral and the clutch released. I could "feel it" in the clutch pedal. When I pushed in on the clutch, the sound stopped. About two hours later when I had finished my business, and cranked it up...no noise. I drove home (about 40mi) with no further noises. There is 65000mi on the car, and when I turn it off, when in neutral, it has always made a rattling sound, but never when running. I suspect the throwout bearing, but normally, they make sounds when you push the clutch in, not when they are released. Any ideas? Thanks, in advance, for any assistance.
a bad throwout bearing can make noise with your foot off of the clutch pedal, and get quiet when you apply pressure to the clutch pedal. I have had that happen on other cars.....
From your description I would be thinking about throwout bearing or possibly torque tube couplers/bearings....
Thanks for the quick reply. I was going to drop the exhaust and the lower bellhousing cover and look at the throwout bearing/clutch. Any suggestions as to what to look for,if, in fact, that is the problem? Thanks again.
if you had access to a lift and a helper to sit in the car to operate the clutch.... that would be a good way to try and diagnose where the noise is coming from.... (if it will make noise at that time)
the throwout bearing issue i had was on my wife's car years ago.... i had replaced the throwout bearing, clutch disc and pressure plate with all new factory parts (no it was not a corvette) a few hundred miles later the noise started..... had to pull the trans back out and replace the throwout bearing to get rid of the noise
would make noise without my foot on the clutch, and would go away with pressure on the clutch.....
Thanks again. I do have a lift, and can get someone to sit in the car, if the sound shows up again. When your throwout bearing was bad, could you tell it by physically feeling it with your hand when under the car without the engine running?
