I need to replace the serpentine belt on my 2k C5. What is the best belt out there? Am tired of hearing birds chirp under the hood until the car gets to temp. Thought the Gatorback was the best choice (viewing an older thread) but am not sure now since I heard they have been discontinued by Auto Zone due to breaks. Your thoughts please.
We can't just say 'replace the condenser' and you'll be good to go; you have to determine where the leak is. Perhaps at the back of the compressor where the lines attach, perhaps at the condenser, perhaps anywhere...you need to find the leak. I recommend you start your own thread for this troubleshooting though.
In my experience, the chirping noise is caused by pulleys not aligned, wobbling balncer pulley, bad idler wheels or bad tensioner bushing.
Actually, if everything it not perfectly aligned and in good working order, you are going to have some sort of problem.
For the AC guy, did the system hold a charge before you changed out the compressor?
If so, check to make sure the o-rings are in place and not damaged at the connections you loosened or removed. The tensioner bushing for the AC is what was bad on my '01 when I had the chirping. I'll bet that is where your chirping is coming from.
You can check what belt is chirping by taking off the main belt and starting the car.
If it still chirps, the problem is with the AC belt.
You can let the car run for a minute or so, but I don't like letting it run longer because the main belt is what turns the water pump.
I prefer Gatorback belts myself, but check the harmonic dampener pulley for wobble before putting the new belt on.
On my car, my chirping was caused by a bad tensioner.
My harmonic balancer does wobble slightly. Maybe I have more issues. Will install the Gatorback and replace the tensioner as well. Thanks for your input.
Get the belts and figure out which one is chirping.
I didn't measure the run out on my old pulley, so it's hard to say what may be acceptable.
At this point, I say zero.
It's pretty expensive to swap out the harmonic damper mainly due to the labor involved.
Since I do all my own work and have the necessary tools, it's just time and aggravation for me. I'm sure if you do some searches around here, you can see what other may have paid.
For my problem, I figured the wobbling pulley was causing sideways stresses in the tensioner by moving the belt back and forth on the idler. Once the bushing wore, it couldn't do it's job properly. I swapped out the pulley prior to getting a new tensioner, but it's possible the chirping may have gone away with just the tensioner being replaced.
