Default Something I noticed with the Ranger Method

While doing the Ranger Method, I waited a bit after refill and watched the reservoir with the cap off.
I saw a thin line of dirty fluid coming from the bottom of the reservoir (coming straight up thru the middle of the fluid I had just added). Instead of pumping the clutch, I just put the cap back on and gave it an hour. Sure enough, the fluid was all dirty again. I am going to be repeating the full process (30 clutch pumps included) for some time, I guess. Thanks to the Ranger. sam

Funny..I just did mine on monday. 3x to get fairly clean. Went for spin, did another change and noticed same line coming from center of resevoir straight to top. Thought it was weird too.

Whisperinsam33,
Quite normal for a neglected clutch fluid change out of the clutch reservoir.
It will come around after many repeated refills of fresh clean fluid.

My experience was similar, in that when I did my first Ranger flush, I replaced the fluid with the GM 'Brake & Clutch Fluid Super DOT 4' part # 88958860. Almost immediately I noticed the thin stream of dirty fluid rising up from the orifice at the bottom of the reservoir - this is some of the old fluid in the hose below the reservoir which was not evacuated by the procedure, and this old fluid did not readily 'mix' with the new fluid. I proceeded to pump the clutch pedal, and after 15 pumps, I heard it start squeaking every time I pumped the clutch. Not good.

I stopped the procedure right there and repeated the Ranger flush using 'Delco Supreme 11 Brake Fluid' part # 12377967 (a straight DOT 3 fluid). No issues noticed with the mixing of the fluids, and the clutch pedal stopped its squeaking after 30 or so pumps of the pedal.

I've been periodically doing the 'modified' Ranger method which gets the old fluid out of the hose as well, still using the DOT 3 fluid, and it has stayed clean and quiet.

The first few times you do it it is almost impossible to get completely clear fluid (unless you want to be out there with a turkey baster for hours) but once you've done it a few times it's easy to maintain if you stay on top of it...

What's the procedure for the 'modified' ranger method? Any how-to threads out there? I always do the ranger method and if there is a better way to do it I'm all ears.

I prefer using a larger rubber battery filler, (using only) just for the brake & clutch reservoirs.

I like to empty the dirty/cloudy, old fluid into a large coffee can cradled firmly nearby the reservoirs & plenty of clean rags nearby.

I also swab out the clutch reservoir with a small (unfrayed) piece of clean t shirt material.

Wrap the material around the erasure end of a pencil to get the flat bottom & bottom sides of the clutch reservoir.

Edit:....Thanks cdkcorvette7, for posting up the picture.

You know I have one of those and never even thought of it... I've always used a turkey baster. I think the battery filler would be better.

Here's the image in case the link above is deleted...

Hey Eric,
You have a little black worm coming out of the bottom of your clutch reservoir!

I would suggest not wasting your time and money on a remote bleeder. They're not needed.

I would get the 'worm' Eric D posted above after flushes 2-6 or so, but after that it would take overnight for the fluid to get slightly dirty again. No driving, just sitting there. Am I wasting my time doing this over and over? Will it eventually get clean and stay clean?

This is what I do.... I take a turkey baster and fit it with a small 6 inch length of 1/8th vacuum tubing making sure the connection it tight ( have to use two or three different diameters to step up the 1/8 line to fit the nozzle end of the turkey baster... you want to be able to get the 1/8th line down inside the hole at the bottom of the reservoir is you want to be able to get it in there about 4 to 6 inches..

the first thing you want to do is extract the old fluid using another baster.. then you want to wipe out the inside of the reservoir.. now fill the reserve. 1/2 way with new clean fluid.. the n take the modified turkey baster and suck up as much clean fluid into the baster... being careful not to let the fluid drip , insert the 1/8th tube down the hole about 4 to 6 inches... then squeeze the ball and it will force clean fluid in a stream and flush out the black dust contaminants.. you will immediately see the black being forced out of that whole..it will make the fluid in the reserve back. Now suck that fluid out and wipe the inside again.. now fill the resv again 1/2 way ... then reload the baster with clean fluid, instead in the hole and squeeze the bulb again.. you will see much less black coming out the hole.. again suck out the rev. the third time you do this, you will see no black coming from the hope because you have completely flushed the system clean.. such out the resv again and fill with fresh clean fluid and you are done... no need the depress the clutch.. this will last a year or more depending on your driving style.
