Default to do or not to do ??

Hi everyone, I'm pretty new to c5's, purchased mine at the beginning of this summer. I have a 1999 targa mn6 with 130km's on it (Quebec car).Only mods for now are vararam cai with smooth coupler and xs-power cat back wich I installed this summer..

I am looking to go with a cam this winter (I would install myself) probably englandgreen whiplash and everything that goes with it... was wondering if while I'm at it I should try to get a hold of a set of 799 heads (ls2).... I've been searching around and there seem's to be some controversial threads about their benefits...

The reason I would go with these heads is that I could probably get them cheap from my local scrap yard compared to 243's... My question is would there be a gain going with these heads or is there no real gain in hp...

I'm not a road racer and the car is pretty much a week end toy... I occasionnaly go to the 1/4 mile but that's about it...

Thanks for the advise !!

Simon

243 heads (LS6) came with 2.00 hollow stem intake valves (lighter) 799 (LS2) regular solid 2.00 intake valves

243 came with sodiom filled stem 1.55 exhaust valves (lighter and more heat dissepation) 799 came with regular solid stem 1.55

and this one I`m not sure of but 243 01-04 came with the blue LS6 springs (more lift capable) but 2001 243 and 2005 and later 799 came with yellow LS6 valve springs (less than the blue lift capability)

that`s why true 243 heads off of a ZO6 are much more expensive because of the hollow intake and sodiom exhaust.

this is what I understood from reading so anybody correct me if I`m wrong.

and they are popular because most sites write for their ported 243 heads:
*LS6 Style* or 243 or 799 head casting but the title says ported LS6 of 243 heads

From what Ive heard only C5 Z06 243 heads have the special valves and springs. 243's that came on the LS2 and trucks etc do not. 243's are generally more expensive because of their reputation. LS2 243's and 799's are the same and can be found for around 400 a set. Thats what I paid for my 243's.

Ok I see the differences between them, but would they be beneficial over my stock 241's... My goal is to go mid 400 rwhp and while I'm doing my cam this winter i figure i'll be there so was wondering if I don't have any work done to them if they will benefit me on the long run or if I should just stay with my stocker's...

They will certainly benefit. They flow better and will up the compression. You can port and polish and mill the heads down too to further both of these benefits too.

Full bolt on, 243 or 799 heads, and a mild cam should do the trick. If you have an A4 you might not see 400rwhp but stab a converter in there and it will run.

799/243 are an upgrade. You will see a bump in power from better flow and your CR will go from a 10:1 to a 10:5. If you search hard and long or pony up some cash you can get a set of ported heads for about $1000
