A hunk of the cat came out of the exhaust of my 04 corvette. I was told by somebody that these cars had 4 cats total ? Anyhow I take it to the dealer and they are telling me 2 grand total to replace the cat because it is just one piece ? Which is strange because i have seen aftermarket cats and they are separate. Will an aftermarket cat throw a code ? Basically here's the questions that I have.
How many cats does an 04 vette have ?
Are they one big piece or just several small pieces ?
Will aftermarket cats throw a code ? or make the engine run wrong ?

4ish ... 2 "pup" or pre cats and 2 cats.
They're all a part of the mid/crossover pipe which is actually a $1700 part. So they're not really trying to take you for a ride so much as they're just blindly going by the books.
No. And any competent exhaust shop could hack out the stockers and weld in aftermarket cats with no ill effects. Also the engine tuning is only done with regards to the 2 O2 sensors before the cats. The rear O2 sensors are simply there to monitor the cats themselves.

I see I see said the blind man. So needless to say I should be fine with swapping them out with high flows and not get an engine code.

Yep, the only codes you might potentially get would be if you failed to reinstall the rear 02 sensors which again have nothing to do with the engine tuning. (Some guys just get those codes deleted)

You could have installed a set of AR headers for that, or purchased a used mid section from any of the forum vendors who install headers daily and saved big $$.
If you do swap them out to high flow cats and need he PCM reprogrammed, we can do that with our $149 mail in tune special.
Pretty sure starting in 2003 they Corvette went back down to 2 cats and removed the pup cats. Either way you can find used mid-pipes that include the cats for much cheaper than what the dealer wants. I have several of those pipes if you're willing to pay shipping.
But heck, for $2k you can buy a set of long tube headers that include high-flow cats.
My top recommendations are LG Motorsports Super-Pro headers or Melrose Smoothflow.
Just putting this out there but under federal law ALL catalytic converters have to be covered by the manufacturer from defect for 8 years and/or 80K miles from date of purchase. I know this as I have been been doing emission testing in Ga. since 1998. As you have an 04 depending on the in service date you might be covered. Just sayin
