Hi all,
Looking for advice on how to go about replacing the driver's side mirror glass. It cracked as I was putting the mirror back onto the housing. Can I just have a new regular piece of mirror cut by a glass shop and glue it on there or is it special glass? It was a pita getting it put back on the housing and it must've cracked from uneven pressure applied by my hand. Anyway, just looking for tips on what I can do here. Thanks
When you replace the mirror housing don't use your hand. Get a wood block and cover it with a small rag to put even pressure over a larger area. I would buy another one and try again. Also make sure you put some silicone lubricant (or equal) on all the contact points/pins. I did this with one I bought from Corvette Central and had no problem at all with the installation.
You can get just the mirror glass on amazon for around $24. Then you can pry the old broken glass off the plastic mount plate, install the plate back onto the motor (without the glass so you don't have to worry about it cracking) and then attach the new mirror to the already mounted plate. After reading all the horror stories about people cracking new mirrors while installing them I didn't feel like spending 90$ for a mirror and risk breaking it.
