Re: Does traction control shut off throttle? (OliverM5)
From the 2002 Corvette sales brochure, page 12.
Standard Traction Control
"A full-function Traction Control system is standard in every 2002 Corvette".
"This advanced system works in conjunction with the antilock brakes and electronic throttle control to optimize traction by reducing tire slip on many surfaces".
Re: Does traction control shut off throttle? (Mike Schriber)
gotta disagree Mike.
From my 98 owners manual, Section 4 Page 8, Traction Control System (TCS)
"...The system operates only if it senses that the rear wheels are spinning too much or are beginning to lose traction. When this happens, the system works the rear brakes and reduces engine power (by closing the throttle and managing engine spark) to limit wheel spin.
The TRACTION SYSTEM ACTIVE message will come on when the TCS system is limiting wheel spin. You may feel or hear the system working, but this is normal."
Re: Does traction control shut off throttle? (Mike Schriber)
Close. Traction Control does not use the brakes, and Active Handling does not chop the throttle.

We are going to have to disagree on the above. Traction control does use the brakes and Active handling does chop the throttle.. Maybe you have the terms confused?

Not exactly. Turn your TC off and leave AH on and tell me if AH cuts throttle. Not one BIT!!!!!! AH only involves the ABS system, it has NOTHING to do with throttle management. TC on the C5 works by the PCM cutting fuel off to the motor (and apparently applies some rear brake as well, as earlier posted). But if the fuel is cut to the motor and the rear brakes are applied you won't be able to smoke your brakes like you can on an SS.

I think you are confusing Active Handling with Competetive handling. Active Handling is the mode that your car is in by default???
Re: Does traction control shut off throttle? (ZBrink)
while I think arguing on the internet is retarded, how can you say Mike's statement is correct when the owner's manual specifically states the operation?
Re: Does traction control shut off throttle? (lotzahp)
Sorry, I should have mentioned that cars without Active Handling work differently.
Also, Active Handling alone (in Competition Mode) does not chop the throttle or reduce engine power. When used in the default mode, it's Traction Control that chops the throttle.
Re: Does traction control shut off throttle? (mike76002)
AH works with the breaks, TC works by cutting engine power.
That's how I always understood it. When I forget to turn off my TC, I can really feel the power drop off, especially when I shift to second.

Is TC special option on C5????
Mine only has AH ....
Does this make sense?
All Corvettes have Traction Control..
Some Corvettes have Active Handling which is the Default mode when you start the car (if you have active handling). Active handling is a combination of traction control and yaw control. If you turn active handling off you are also turning off traction control. If you switch to Competition handling Traction Control is switched off but you still have Yaw control.
And it goes with saying, )but I will anyway) :) :) ABS is always on.

Thanks for clarification BUTTTT (yes .... always a BUT ;) ) I my C5 only has AH button, it does not have the Competition handling. Is Competition Handling riding control option for C5????

Mike is your car a 98? I don't believe 98s had AH.... Are you sure it isn't TC you are speaking of? If it is really AH then all you have to do is hold the AH button down for 10 seconds while sitting still with the motor on. But I don't think AH came until 1999?

Yes, mine is 98 and it does have a button next to the center console for Active Handling. Thanks, let me try and let you know.
Thanks

***BTW, Do I have to do it everytime or just one time and it will disable the TC and still keep the yaw control on???

I double checked and AH came in "98 1/2"! Competition handling only stays engaged for the ignition cycle you are on. Then everything goes back to AH (default). If you didn't get an owners manual with your car you can download or view one at http://www.mygmlink.com just register and then click on my glovebox.. Lots of good stuff there.
Traction control was standard on all 97-2000 Corvettes with Active Handling as an option starting mid '98. Active Handling II became standard on all Vets in 2001. You do not have to be stopped to activate comp. mode with AH II.
