I'm currently designing a custom tube frame track day car (on a budget) and I'm very interested in using and ls1 or ls6 and there respective trans-axle from the c5 vette is it possible to eliminate the torque tube and mate the engine and trans-axle to make a mid engine configuration? without major mods?
Im very interested in other opinions and feedback as well
Yes, you could very easily (the T56 trans was mounted to the LS1 engine in the 4th gen Camaro) but you'd have to sit on the front axle or sit beside the engine. Just as a rough guess, the front of the engine would likely end up about where the shifter is when looking at a C5.
It is entirely possible to eliminate the torque tube. When you compare this to other transaxle options though, (g50, ricardo, etc) it is LONG. A local guy near me built a Factory Five GTM using all stock Corvette driveline, minus a torque tube. He had to lengthen the frame by nearly a foot. It is ridiculous looking.
It is possible, but in my opinion not a great option. One thing I would look into is a Subaru 6 speed out of an STi. You would need to fab an adapter plate and input shaft, but with a sleeved center differential and blocked rear output, it could make an extremely affordable transaxle. They have been known to hold over 800awhp in stock form, so I would wager a guess that ~400whp would be reliable through the "front" ring and pinion.
I have been daydreaming about this setup for about a year now. Don't have any facts/data, just ideas.
haha yeah im trying to consider all my options and the shorter i can make the engine trans-axle combo the better the car will be for it, but i got plenty of time to consider those options because il have to wait till im out of school before i can start building

There are a lot of people using the subaru 5spd with a reverse cut "front" ring and pinion in vw-type dune buggy setups. You can research that to get an idea of what I am talking about when I mention locking the center diff and blocking off the rear output.
You would need a custom input shaft, but in the long run that would not be too big of a deal.
Also, from the front flange of the transmission to the centerpoint of the output shaft is almost exactly 6"
