Snowmobile: Drivetrain by....

Those of you who were at the Cruisein drags got to witness my first and only run on nitrous at the track with slicks. I had checked a/f on the dyno NA with Tom in Atlanta, sorted out the nitrous system so it would work (didn't go back to the dyno) (Bad connection to inline fuse) and I used up a couple of bottles trying it out on the street with street tires. ()
I did a few NA runs at Beech Bend just to get the feel of my new M12 tranny, not for major time or trap speed. Had some trouble hooking up and car seemed to kick to the left under hard acceleration. I checked tire pressures twice. Then I opened the bottle.
Did a decent burnout. Armed the system. Purged. Went out slowly in 1st as I didn't want to trigger the nitrous in 1st my first time out. Good clean fast shift into 2nd. Poured it on including the nitrous....it was pulling like mad...and somewhere in those few moments in 2nd, I drove through the clutch.
Note: I have been VERY happy with my Cartek clutch on the street and on the track (NA) but we knew that on nitrous with slicks, the car would probably drive through the clutch. On the dyno back at ARE, with a half empty bottle, no bottle warmer, with the nitrous not even set to come on until 4200rpm, it still went to 725+rw and you could see it went right through the clutch.
Sure enough it did that at the track too. I went to shift into 3rd and got shut out and missed the shift, but put the clutch in again, got it into 3rd and then dumped it all in 3rd to try to pull the guy in the next lane (Buckmaster I think). The nitrous came on again and I was seriously pulling him to the lights. Did a 12.7 and 125mph which isn't totally terrible given I went out slowly and missed a shift. But at the end of the track when I went to make my turn, CLANK CLANK CLANK (a hard metallic clank) in the rear...felt like on the driver's side. I picked up my slip and drove back to the pits and parked the car. Still was making some noise particularly when I wasn't going absolutely straight. Clutch was definitely hot but I could drive the car.
I let the car cool down for about an hour. Mike Norris was kind enough to come and help me do a visual inspection. Half shafts seemed fine, no leaks, nothing visible that we could see. I then did slow figure 8's for Mike and we couldn't get it to clank again although I could hear some kind of rubbing and it seemed to want to spin the dr side rear wheel. I had Neill follow me back to the Baymont and put the car on the trailer.
In subsequent conversations, I'm pretty sure that what I broke was the posi. Several people have had similar failures. Not worth speculating anymore....time to take it in and get it fixed.
I spoke with Jayson at MTI today. Happy to take a look. I'm taking the car over on Thursday after I get back to town. While we are there, he is going to install a McLeod DD clutch for me, one of Glen's output shafts, possibly HAL shocks and do whatever it takes to restore the rear.
I appreciate Jayson for being willing to take me so quickly.
I'm looking for HAL shocks that are available and yet not at the top of the cost wave we've been experiencing with them in the last 2 months. Email me if you have ideas. Jayson may have a set, I just forgot to ask him.
I'll keep you posted. I will dyno with nitrous while at MTI and see what it will do when the clutch isn't slipping. That should be fun.
Jayson, thanks once again.

Good luck with the next round. I just had my Mcloed duel disk upgraded and having now broke it in, it works great.
Regards,
JB

we are working on programming as we speak. Then its time to break in the clutch, about 1000 miles city driving.
Make the trip! No, you cannot have my foglamps this time! hehe
or my swaybars either! No, No, No!!!
well okay, if you really want them...

Doug if was fun trying to keep up with you in the mountains on the way to the CI. I am still trying to remove the finger nail marks my wife made holding on.
Consider yourself fortunate though. You are in a great spot to race & break your car. Not only do you have the local tuners but plenty of really mod savy people to help you with any issues.
Out here in Hawaii the race & break game is not very good, unless you own an import. ;)
You and I both know Jayson will hook you up though. I can't wait to see that dyno!

Jayson and I will come to some understanding about price but it will probably be a package of some kind after we talk and after we find out what happened to the rear. I recommend you just call him and check it out directly. He's pretty much the only shop where big cube cars and McCleod clutches have been working out consistently. I figure SW is a good enough recommendation for me. This is my 3rd and last try with the McLeod. Has cost me 4k in parts and labor so far. In and out. All my early videos have a chirp just as the clutch engages.

It is finally arriving. I'm really happy for you, NoMercy. Enjoy.

Hey Buckmaster! I have a video of our (sorry MY) burnout and the actual race. Your friends were sure giving you a hard time during staging! :D I'll send the video's to you tonight. If someone could post 2 videos on your site and put the URL's in this thread, holler and I'll send them to you. :D
In other news:
My C5 is cleaned up and ready to go to MTI....mid-day tomorrow I'm thinking. I've located a front pair of HAL shocks so far. Anyone have an idea where I can pick up a full set or at least the rears? Email me please ASAP.

Take the time and do it right, with all that HP, you'll need the tough stuff..
