Stock engine/exhaust. My ac compressor has a slight leak and I need to replace the gasket where the lines attach. Problem is, I can't even get a wrench to the bolt to loosen it up. Don't want to disassemble anything I don't need to. Has anyone removed an AC compressor ? Thanks
The ONLY way to get the line manifold bolt loose without unbolting the compressor is with a special little 13mm u-joint socket with 1/4" drive, from Sears. The part # is 43199. Cost is about $7 I think.
Stick this on the end of a pretty long 1/4" extension, attach to a 1/4" breakover bar and get creative. The downside is that if the bolt is tight, you may break the little 13mm socket at the u-joint. be gentle.
Plan B involves unbolting the compressor from the bracket and moving it around enough to get to the bolt. Still very difficult.
Plan C is to remove the exhaust manifold.
Plan D can remove the compressor from the car - do B&C above plus remove the water pump.
That said, the compressor can also leak at the rear valve o-ring, and they are notorious for leaking around the big center o-ring that wraps around the center of the compressor body. So, try to be sure where the leak is before fixing it.
Best price I found on a replacement NEW Delco was from Gold Recycling in Dallas. They are all made in the Far East these days, Malasia I think.
