I had the "empty" ... gauge problem on only one occasion, no warnings otherwise.
Tried three fill ups with the large Techron additive bottle when near true empty. The false empty on the gauge went away, but the gauge still seemed to sometimes indicate a little lower than expected. I followed someone's advice on here and filled a true set of empty tanks about 1/2 way (9 - 10 gallons) and then quickly poured in a large Techron bottle and then quickly finished topping off all tanks ... trying to get most or all of the Techron into the secondary tank on the right side.
That was four months ago and haven't had a problem since. System is completely accurate now.
The "fuel gage problem" has been going on for years. One owner photographed his right tank variable resistor assembly and it was all crudded up. Supposed to be sulfur in the gas. The crud can be wire brushed, cleaned and re-installed and will work OK. Lot of labor removing it. Mr. Goodwrench charges a lot. Techron is cheap insurance.Right tank is supposed to continually supply the left tank keeping it full. Either the PCM or the ECM reads the level from both tanks and the computer calculates the overall level. It's been said that the computer will default to "empty" when it doesn't get a legitimate reading from the tight tank.
