When I swap my heads over to the new ones which head gaskets and bolts should I use? Do I need any of the other gaskets or special tools when completing a head and cam install?
Thanks in advance!
Phillip :D
There is a lot about this at LS1tech.com
I have a some of the same questions.
Some are talking about getting your head gaskets from NAPA, they use the gasket as OEM but wrapped diffrent. check it out.
The head bolts are not Torque-to-yield type. Even though for a good while GM promoted replacing the head bolts if you pulled the heads.
My buddy Steve, at our local Chevy dealership who is the corvette mech. said he read a bulletin from GM that all warranty work that required pulling the heads that they were not to replace the bolts, but to clean them up and reuse them.
Sounds like GM don't mind us wasting money, but they don't want to.
:mad
GM has done it to us again. The right side head gasket has been discontinued. You have to buy the top end set that retails for $260. You can still buy a left side head gasket though????
If you use head studs you will have a hard time installing the heads in the car.
Any bolt that long is most certainly a "torque to yield" fastener! If ARP rod bolts stretch these bolts will definately will!
Make sure when you use a new factory bolt that you clean the orange crap off the thread and replace it with a good sealer. That material will cause the head bolt to reach torque before its ready.
The stock head gaskets (GM) are fine for most applications. If you want more compression you can go to a .030" thick steel shim gasket.
The bolts are cheap......why screw around with it!
