Default Is my C5 haunted?

Saturday I was driving down the highway from an afternoon at the dragstrip, when suddenly it feels like the brakes apply for a half second, then it pulls hard left, then hard right. I'm thinking a tire has gone flat, so I tap the brakes to slow down and pull over and it does it again, pulling hard left, then hard right. Then the ABS/Traction Control/Active Handling all light up. But the car is driving normal again, so I continue to my friends house. Five Minutes later, I get a Service Soon message on the DIC. When I start up the car at my friends house, no more warnings or lights. Sorry, but I haven't had a chance to see what codes came up. Any clues?

It's a 1999 M6 coupe with 170,000 miles and a cam, headers and exhaust.

Sounds like the steering wheel position sensor may be going out. You will need to check the codes.

Nope. But it seems like just about any type of code turns the traction control/AH off. IIRC, some of the TC/AH codes does disable the ABS system.

Posting the codes will be a big clue.

Thanks guys! I would not have thought of the steering position sensor. This is my first Corvette, and I am learning about performance cars all over again. I will try to find the codes tonight and post them. I did look up replacing the sensor and it may be more than I want to tackle. I'm not as flexable crawling under the dash as I used to be!

Better hope it's not a failed steering wheel position sensor. You have a '99. There IS no replacement available. Anywhere, at any price. Your only hope would be used and cross your fingers.

You may or may not find any DTCs. The SWPS may be just flukey enough to cause the issues that your seeing but not enough to trip a DTC.

In any case, removing the drivers seat gives you LOTS of room to work,, trust me.. You can lay in the drivers floor with your feet over the back and it works wonderfully!!

Bill

Before you remove yours,, make sure that you can find the CORRECT replacement SWPS for your year and RPO Level!

Just my luck! Finally get the car of my dreams and then there's no replacement parts. OK, just for argument's sake, say the sensor is on the way out. I know it can posess my car and try to make it try to change lanes by itself. What if it goes out completely or if it's removed? What kind of issues would that cause?

Have you tried Gene Culley at GM Parts House??

www.gmpartshouse.com.

If anyone has it or can find it or knows about it,, he will. Give Gene and Patrick a call for the real 411 on the part!

Let me know how you make out.

Bill

Mine did that once , it was not the sensor , the plug needed reseating on the abs module under the hood.

I have had mine replaced twice in the past 4 years. The second time it didn't throw a code for about a week after it started these same type symptoms.
