I keep seeing X pipes from different manufacturers and have wondered: 1) if at the "x" the exhaust gases are redirected like with an "H" pipe or if its simply an "x" to make room for the two pipes under the car at the intersect? 2) Is this something a GOOD muffler or custom exhaust place could build or is there something special about them?
It helps with scavenging the exhaust system. Its a better design than the H pipe, which allows exhaust gases to get caught in the cross over pipe. It doesn't need to be a special pipe. Just a 2.5" x-pipe to match the rest of the system.
X-pipes also quite down popping and decel noises people complain about with after market exhausts. I just had a muffler shop weld one in. A pipe is a pipe, so no need to spend allot on an after market IMO.
The X pipe is a big step up from the H pipe. In fact, the H pipe that is installed only has a cross over hole about the size of a quarter in each of the bank pipes to allow the gasses go thru.
NOTE.... Adding an X pipe WILL NOT really add any measurable HP. It will however remove some of the gurggle and pop that the C5 OEM exhaust has.
Here is my Stainless Works 3" system with their X pipe:
If you ever purchas the XS Power header system, here is what their X pipe looks like and where it is placed:

If you are really serious about exhaust system performance,,, find the rare O pipe. All the foreign car ricer guys run them:
