what is the proper way to keep the engine from spinning when removing the damper bolt?
I used a old steel differential carrier clamp wedged on one of the fins and resting on the cross member to loosen the bolt.
when I took off the damper I did not mark the position relative to the crank since it doesn't have a alingment key I figured its position wasn't important.
Do you need to mark the position of the damper to the crank. I've read in some forum threads that you do and others that you don't.
obviously I didn't do it and I'm just wondering if there might be vibration issues.
If your damper has a balancing pin or pins inserted into the front face that means the damper was used to dial in the balance of the engine and reinstallation w/o having it oriented in the same position may cause an issue. Not certain what the 'correct' way is to keep the engine from turning. I put them in 4th gear and put the emergency brake on and I chock the tires. I've removed and reinstalled quite a few with that method w/o issue.

Ok cool not sure if this one has balancing pins it does have about a dozen holes along the perimeter in an un even pattern.
its an auto so the gear thing an ebrake dont apply
Use the Hawk Balancer installation tool to install the balancer. He's on the forum and it works great. Use a Ridgid strap wrench to hold the balancer when you put the 240 lbs of torque on your new ARP bolt.
Take a look in all those holes. I believe there are three different sizes of the balance pins. They're differentiated by the clearance from the end of the pin to the front of the balancer.
Not the GM OEM bolt, it is TTY and there is a very specific procedure that must be followed. LS1howto doesn't cover this procedure and is not correct so don't follow that web site. Installation tool is key as well. Don't use a bolt to pull on the harmonic damper.
