Default 03 Z06 Reveal Molding Replacement, Help

Please don't shoot me, yes, I used the "search" feature. This is a old topic and photos have been removed.

Based on the information I've learned using above mentioned search. I have ordered shop manuals (should have done that long ago), Reveal molding from Gene, and rope caulking from Eastwood.

I'm missing the basics:

Do I need to remove the entire door weather stripping?
Do I remove headliner?
How do I remove weather stripping without doing damage?
Do I remove interior trim?
I think there is 10 screws that hold reveal molding?

If someone would please be kind enough to give me the basics and get me pointed in the right direction it would be most appreciated. I read that this is only an hour project and I hope to keep it that way.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read my request for help.

The shop manuals will tell you how. This is on my list (leaky FRC roof), it looks straight forward but it is not clear if the weatherstrip needs to be replaced. I hope not, that sh*t is expensive!

Thanks for the response.....

This seems to be a well documented problem. But, I can't seem to find the well documented fix. Man, that weather stripping will kill the Christmas spirit for sure.

Hey, I just found out how to troubleshoot the blower motor and it is reasonably priced

Anxiously awaiting manuals

Default Giving Back

Well, I'm still working on this project and wanted to share my findings with the group.

Reveal molding was purchased from Gene Culley of GMPARTSHOUSE.COM a vendor here. Most helpful and great prices

Adhesive GM # 12345097 is Permatex 81850 and it has a shelf life of 2 years:

"Permatex products have an estimated shelf life of 2 years. There is a laser inked numeric code on the package. ie. 6LK1801B. We only care about the first 2 digits. The first digit is the year and the second is the month of manufacture. In this example it would be December (L is the 12th letter of the alphabet) of 2006. So this product is expired."

Again, if anyone has any helpful hints or pictures to help me it would be most appreciated. I'm trying not to replace the weather stripping but....from what I can gather it will be required because it's glued.

Does anyone have pictures that they would care to share.

There seems to be several ways to correct this issue and I'd to go with the proven method.

Thanks in advance.

I've done this fix. Just be gentle with the weather stripping and it should come right off. The adhesive is at the ends and the top corner only. Use a hair drier to heat up the adhesive to make it a little easier. The weather stripping is held on by being notched into the retainer clip, so the adhesive will only be found at the three spots I mentioned and is very pliable. After that all the bolts required to remove are exposed and its pretty easy. Use the caulk between molding and the body, and the molding and retainer clip. DO NOT USE RTV.

CeeRow,

Thanks so much for the response.

Okay, so, the rope caulk goes between the car body and the reveal molding. More rope caulk between the weather strip retainer and the reveal molding. i.e It appears that the reveal molding is "sandwiched" between the weather strip retainer and the car body.

Thanks for the silicone warning, I have a tube of it and will use for another project. As mentioned, I purchased the rope caulk so now I see that is preferred. Man, if I can do this without replacing the weather strip that's my Christmas gift

Thanks again,
Chris

I am on my second reveal molding replacement on my 2003 C5 Z06 driver's door in 10-years. What I noticed looking at your video is that my roof and water drain are designed differently than yours... maybe the result of a much needed engineering change?

On my car, there is a purpose-built drain channel along the windshield that is not on your car, or at least as pronounced, and it would appear that in the area where you indicated the surface was "rough" and you were getting leaks, GM made an attempt to channel rain gutter water over to this purpose-built windshield drain.

Maybe that was their plan from the beginning and then they added a better windshield drain and hoped for the best. Too, my roof appears different than yours in that it seems to have a metal frame (maybe the Z06s had a titanium roof?).

Either way, I am digging into this thing again and will keep folks posted on progress made.
