Hello everyone. Got back late last night from picking up my Z06 in Utah. A fully loaded 02 EBM with 1400 miles. Its actually better then new. The owner installed CAGS elimination plug and put a carpet matched partition and covers in the rear. All this at $7,000.00 less then I have seen new Z06's for online. Car feels great in the power dept but i'm always looking for more. First thing (and I hope its not just me) is the stock shifter has to go. The shifter throw is too long and 3rd feels like you need to put allot of effort to find it. I was thinking between a B&M and a Hurst....is Hurst the best to go with these days? Also air intakes, been debating between a Blackwing and a Halltech T1 sidewinder. Blackwing because its so easy to install and it has allot of filtering material. The Halltech cause it comes with a air bridge to but of course is more money.
Great choice in color , ya gotta love that electron blue...I'd suggest a nice set of LG longtube headers and a Borla Stinger exhaust ...IMHO I think the C5's and Z06's are waaaaay to quite with the stock exhaust set up.
As a fellow owner of an '02 Z06 (great cars - best Vette ever), I would recommend going for the low hanging fruit first: intake, headers, 180 therm with fan controllers, new shifter. I have the intake, headers, thermo parts on my car now and they do make a difference. I will be adding a Breathless Performance shifter soon - check it out - it offers you the ability to configure it to your tastes, and is a very high quality piece.
Intake best bang for the buck is probably either Vortex Rammer ( my choice - works great) or the Blackwing. If you want to spend more, there has been a lot of very good press about the VaraRam system. Lots of header choices out there, go with any quality header with 1 3/4" primaries and 3" collectors - long tubes of course. Personally I prefer and have stainless steel, but there are some other good mild steel headers available. Whatever you choose, get them a real ceramic coating, not just one for appearance - underhood heat is a power killer in these cars.
Once you get to this point, plan a good dynojet test/tune session with a facility which has and knows how to use LS6edit software to reprogram your PCM. All this should be worth a minimum of 435 to 440 crank h/p (380+ at rear wheels)
I think i'm going to go with the blackwing. I have a open invatation to use a dynojet dyno whenever I need to from a good friend at Magnaflow so I think a baseline dyno is in order. Always good to see what kind of motor you got from the factory. I think GM got the exhaust note dead on for 02. I have heard plenty of 01 Z06's but this sounds deeper. I think I had read this was from the removal of precats.
At "Dyno day" today, a 02 Z06 with 1300 miles on it and only a Halltech filter set up pulled 371 HP. First dyno for him so no baseline, this was the $349 one that Halltech sells. The other stock Z's there made about 10 HP less. I have the Blackwing, but if I did it again I would get the Halltech.
This is very unscientific, but one thing I noticed was how much more you could "hear" the Halltech intake noise over all other cars.

Re: Got a Z06! What mods first? (zcobra1)
Hey GTP:
Congrats dude, excellent choice. Based on the extreme frustrations and bad luck you have had messing with the internals of your LS1 engines on your last 2 C5s i recommend the follwing, which will get you into the 11s, big time, consistently, assuming you can drive it GOOD!
1. Air intake-preferabley Vararam but your black wing will certainly get it done
2. Long tube headers-TPIS
3. Loud Mouth exhaust or other agressive high flowing straight pipe at WOT exhaust (My buddy has this set up on his 02 Z and it was in it recently and it rocks with performance and sound! (maybe be to agressive for those who like a more conservative sound note!)
4. LS6-edit for tuning on a dyno a must after these mods.
5. et streets and skinnines for ultimate hook up and safety down the 1/4 mile.
6. And save $ for a McCLoud clutch as you will need it if you are going to drag it and launch hard to get well into the 11s with the above set up.
This set up above will get the job done and not to many on the street will be able to touch you and if you can drive your in the 11s all days and don't risk GRENADING your engine (like two other C5s) b/c this way you won't touch your engine (internals).
And of course, if you really want to fly, a simple 100 or 150 shot of N20 (there when you want it, use it spariningly and don't abuse it) and you have yourself a reliable, dependable, 10 second race/street car!
I think air intakes on the '02 Z's only add marginal gains. I picked up alot more power with LT headers and would definitely consider them to pick up some nice power.
I went with the Vortex because I wanted air from under the shroud. The cold air screens on the Z06 are okay, but there is still a lot of hot air from the engine to mix with the cold air from the screens.
The Vortex took .26 off my 1/4 mile ET. From 12.05 to 11.79.
