My mufflers are on their last legs so I'll soon have to replace the rear exhaust section. I'll like to get more sound than the stock system. Do you think I'll overdo it with this?

Oh that will definitely be overdoing it. Those are straight pipes with no mufflers. It may be fun at first but the resonance, raspiness and drone will get to you fairly quickly. That type of sound gets old and uncomfortable real fast. I don't recommend them. But, whatever floats your boat.

Before I bought the vette in 2001. I had a 1990 5.0l Mustang. On that I removed the cats and the mufflers..that sounded about right to me.
Would the straight through pipes be much worse on the vette?
Apart from emission testing and stuff like that, I'd be concerned about the "drone" . . . be nice if you could find somene that's done what you're looking for to try it out yourself . . .

Like I said, Im running them. Not bad at all. Still have the cats in. Its loud as hell on WOT, but pretty smooth other than that.

Anything from the cats back is legal as a modification. Some people simply chop the mufflers off their cars. Not my cup of tea, but its not an emissions concern.
You should look at Corsa Xtremes. You get a nice aggressive but refined exhaust note. They sounded so good that I changed out my Magnaflows for them. Completely transformed my driving experience. I don't even turn on the car radio anymore.
I would suggest the B&B Fusion bi-mode cat-back. Just finished installing mine recently. Minimal drone when in "quiet mode" compared to my previous (GHL Magnum) cat-back. When in "loud mode" it has a nice growl/rumble at idle, and a very aggressive sound under heavy acceleration.
To be fair, I have a built motor, long tube headers and O/R x-pipe...but...I think you might experience similar results/satisfaction.
Be sure to check out Ragin' Racin' for any sales or specials. Randy is a Supporting Vendor and is really great to work with!

If you search ebay there's a magnaflow set-up with a built-in X-pipe for about $600. Its about the cheapest catback you can buy. Before I got my turbo set-up I had it, and I really liked it.
Its on the louder side of the spectrum, but not as loud as billy boats or GHL bullets, and definitely louder than corsa pace or most other set-ups. Its a good flowing set-up, so should net you a little upper end horsepower.
The only downside is that it a weld-on, so you'll have to pay a shop to weld it on (cost me $150 at a local muffler shop), and it makes it more complicated to replace it or replace the catalytic converters in the future.
But, if you're looking for a good catback on a budget, your best bet is either that set-up or a used one IMO.
With my apologies to Blair for not asking his permission, you might like the way these sound. The description of what he has is listed under the video screen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=9apjKAl0BD4
IMHO, one of the best sounding cars I've heard in a long time. Sure would like to hear it at WOT.
