I have an 03 z06 and I installed an MTI shifter in it. I had the stock shifter, a c6 z06 shifter and a TSP attack shifter and all of them worked fine. I did the anti venom mod and the tranny has fresh torquedrive fluid. I pull car into garage and swap shifters from the attack shifter to the MTI unit and the shifter feels sort of sloppy. So I remove the washer from the detent bolt and it feels great, just the right amount of notchiness.
Now the problem...I go to take the car for a spin and it will not stay in 1st or 2nd gear. put it in first and as soon as I start to let off the clutch it makes kind of a crunch sound and pops out of gear it to neutral. Same thing in 2nd gear. 3,4,5,6,R all work fine...I had to use 3rd just to get the car back in the garage. 1st and 2nd both feel engaged and sit in about the same position as 3-6 so I don't think I am just not putting it all the way in gear. Logically it has to be either something with the shifter or the install...since it worked just fine before. Help what did I do...or not do. I am totally stumped here.
Did you replace the entire shift box & shifter? just the shifter
Did you conduct a shifter alignment? Not sure...I put the little rod thing to lock it in neutral if that is what you mean.
Is the shifter tight to the shift box? yes
Is the shift box tight to the torque tube? didn't touch it but seems to be.
Is the shift box shaft coupler tight to the transmission shift rod?didn't touch it but seems to be.

Thank you very much I really appreciate the help...this is driving me nuts. I really like the feel of this shifter, and really want to make it work.
Stupid question but can you install a shifter upside down? The MTI shifter is the older model with the gold base. There is a "made in USA" sticker on one end which I put facing to the rear of the car but was not sure if that was correct...if anyone happens to know. It seemed the same either way...
Not famuliar with that shifter. I have a KIRBAN shifter. It has SHIFT STOPS.. Does yours have shift stops? If so,, that can and will affect shift throw.
Nope...no stops. It is very similar to stock shifter just shorter...I.E. No centering spring or anything so I don't really think there is too much to go wrong in the shifter.
For what it's worth before I undid the anti venom mod it was popping out of all the gears and after it only happened in 1 and 2 gears. Also if I try to hold the shifter in gear it starts to grind and kicks it out of gear. I did not try to keep it in gear but it did not seem that I would be able to.
When you look at the lower shift ball on the shifter,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, does it have a nylon shoe to fill in the fork in the shift box like a stock ball?
It reuses the stock nylon pivot part...like the kirban in your pictures.
I found an old thread with pretty much the same symptoms and a procedure for aligning the shift linkage...so I'm going to cross my fingers and give that a try.
Use the stock shifter and the small rod to align the shift box. Basically once the stock shifter is installed you will loosen the 3 torx head bolts and use the press the rod into the opening to align everything. Then snug it up and remove the rod and replace the shifter with what ever one you want to use. Torquing down on those bolts as many times as you have can move things slightly.
realigned shifter box and found someone had rotated the shift assembly on the shifter for some reason. After doing those things the shifter works perfect and all the gears fully engage. Thanks again for the help.
