Considering installing a blower cam set up... Need some insight
I have been giving it some thought and are considering installing a blower cam. What are my options for a blower cam? Im still running a stock bottem end. What would be a good cam set up to go with my car? What kind of Gains will i see from a Cam install and is it worth it without doing the heads?
Ive got a 98 with a vortech systsem with full bolt ons.
Whenever this is asked the general consensus is to contact the manufacturer of the kit you are interested in and ask their opinion.
Most medium cams in the 224-228 and up to 230-234 duration ranges seem to be used allot for simple cam upgrades as well as blower cams. You can see 40-50 whp with a cam alone and more depending on how aggressive you can go. Obviously the more aggressive, the more the need to do heads.
The issue with doing both is allot of $$$. A blower is very expensive, and a cam swap brings about many other needed upgrades IE: valve springs and supporting mods and replacements while in the engine IE: oil pump, timing chain, etc.
Have you done any transmission, T-tube, or diff upgrades to handle the power you are planning? Here is another load of money you would be wise to spend before breaking anything...
You are looking at a huge job and many thousands of dollars to get a proper set up vehicle. Worth it? Absolutely! But be aware of where this is going!
You should consider a long term goal for the car. The more you play, the more you'll pay. Is it worth putting that kind of money into the car? For the most part, blowers and cams are for bragging rights. Would it make more sense to upgrade wheels, tires and suspension to use the wasted power you already have before adding more power that is unusable?
