I got my hands on the tan LS1 version of the timing chain damper, but the block in my 2000 doesn't have existing mounting holes.
Anyone have any tips for drilling / taping the block in the car for the damper install?
Any idea how thick the block is in that area? Maybe I can shorten the bolts and make it a blind hole rather than through hole.
How about clearance to whatever is inside the block behind the damper?
Was thinking that I'd drill a small pilot hole to guide the drill then go right to the final size so any metal chips would be large. If they're large, maybe they'll drop into the pan and get stopped by the oil pickup screen. I'll run the shop vac to grab most of the chips.
We'll, I templated the install location as best as I could and attached the damper to the template. Bolted it in the car (prior to drilling) and it looks like mounting is fairly critical. I had it too tight to the cam gear and it was already in constant contact with the chain. Sliding it down towards the crank increases the chain contact.
Guess I'll whimp out and go the easy route w/the TFS.
Anyone wanna buy a GM LS1 (tan) timing chain damper?
