No question about it torque converter first and gears at the same time if you can afford it. If you can't, just the torque converter will give you a huge noticable difference. After converter install, car will light em up from a stop with no brake torque and will take off twice as fast from a roll on through high way speeds on a 100% more consistent basis. This won't give you actually horsepower increase but will give you the most performance for your $ and will feel and perform like you found an extra 75 ponies:D
Also, you should get a new air intake system like the Vortex, vararam, donaldson blackwing asap, and start that C5 breathing a little bit. This alone should get you about 20 ponies along with aggressive muffler system like the prts or borla stingers.
