I have a 99 6 speed corvette convertible that has a high whinning noise when i am driving in 5th and sixth gear, the noise seems to be more noticeable in the 60-70 mph area, seems to be coming from the transmission area,I can stop the noise by letting off on the gas peddle, but will start again if i push back on the gas,I have noticed this noise for at least a year now but have not paid much attention to it,but now I am living in a much colder climate and the noise seems somewhat louder.I have tried a few test like letting the car coast in neutral-no noise, pushing in the clutch-no noise, there is no noise when the car is pulling, only when cruising in 5th or 6th gear.
Could this be a thro-out bearing issue or maybe something more.
Like I said, the car drives and operates perfect other that this whinng noise.
Any help that you can give would greatly be appreciated because as everyone knows it is expensive to start having someone start tearing these cars apart and looking for the problem.
It sounds like the classic symptoms of gear whine to me.
As far as expense, if this was the case, you'd be looking at a new ring and pinion and seal kit for the diff (at least). Great time for a rear end upgrade though if you decide to go that route. I straight up bought a stage two diff from RPM when ,my whine got bad enough.

Thanks,Donnie Brooks
sounds like same issue I had on my 2016 z06 . Loud whining noise at 55 mph or greater very loud . Turned out to be rear differential was bad had to replace it along with the entire rear axle . Good luck
