Alright, it did it to me on my z06 and now its trying ( or I think it is ) on my 99 frc. Everytime I start the car now ( the past 5 times ) the service steering column lock comes on the dash. However if I hit clear it just goes away and it doesn't affect the driving, it just goes about as normal. I looked and I cant see what looks to be that little box you install to make sure it doesn't happen again. The previous owner had the column locked fixed but didn't know if they put the box on there to keep it from happening again.
what im asking is, ive never seen the column lock come up everytime on the dash but not affect it and can just be cleared away. Knock on wood lol im probably gonna go out tomorrow morning and it wont let me drive over 1.5 mph like the z06 did... I LOVE C5's but EFF the damn steering column lock, what a huge huge eff up lol
I turn the car on and it says " service column lock" it did it 7 times today lol I just hit clear fairly quickly and then it just shows the mileage as usual. I don't know why it hasn't locked up on me yet ( last 2 times the column lock issue happened I couldn't drive the car ) I was gonna buy that $50 box to install and make sure it never happened again but I just didn't know if it had been fixed somehow before without using the box? I couldn't see a box in the column at all when I looked in there. Or maybe ive just gotten lucky the past 20 times? lol
Alright guys, just went out with a flashlight and got the codes and got some photos of the wires around the ecu. Thanks for all this help you all, it means a lot. loading codes now...
Edit, Im not very good with wiring or being able to tell much but I tried to get some photos of that piece that the link showed me. there is some electrical tape around some stuff that doesn't look factory. I just went out again tonight and turned the car on 3 times and the "service column lock came on" If that is all that happens and I can just clear it ill be ok, I just don't want to go out one morning and it actually not let me clear it and im stuck lol

Im honestly not sure what you mean by "did the column lock on me before or after" do you mean physically lock up to where it wont move? If so I have no idea I nevee turned the wheel or tried too unless I was driving. Im sorry if I come off stupid, i believe im only half dumb. That previous post was very helpful actually. Ill check the battery tomorrow and document that, honestly the only thing im worried about is if it will lesve me setting due to the 2 mph limit one of these days. Ill also pay more attention to the buzz from under the column. I know the noise but cant remember if this vette does it or if im thinking of one of my previous ones. I appreciate all this help and consideration man. Ill post up more details tomorrow!
I listened for the buzzing three different times when I turned it on and off and couldn't hear it at all. The steering wheel is capable of turning back left and right with ease without the keys in it or anything, just double checked that now. I ordered that box last night, hopefully didn't waste my money on it lol Honestly the ONLY thing I was concerned about from the beginning of seeing the messages is " I hope it doesn't leave me stranded like the old z06 did where I couldn't go over 2 mph" however what im reading from you gentleman is making me feel a good bit more comfortable about that not happening lol
Actually I do notice that anytime my headlights are on and I hit the brakes, roll up or down the window or something like that my lights will dim, I know all cars it puts a load on but it dims to where its very noticeable. The car starts fine first crank and what not so I didn't think anything would be wrong with the battery however its very well a possibility. Any help you offer im def going to try. Ill double check my knee panel ( that's not the steering column surround is it? Just the panel below the column that's a retangluar shape ) I was actually tinkering around with that area last weekend after I put my shift **** on trying to figure out how to get the gauge cluster out because I ordered those silver bezel surroundings ( like the c6's have ) I was eager to put those on but really didn't know how to take it all apart and didn't wanna break anything so ive been waiting until I print off some directions or what not thatll help me out lol I was honestly unaware that there are so many different things that can go wrong with that column lock. Several different boxes and by-passes, etc. Were gonna narrow it down though, that's for sure! I actually have a close friend who owns the local interstate batterys warehouse and ill have him test my battery tomorrow. If its bad and he ends up swapping one out for me, is there anything I have to worry about when I unhook the battery and install the new on? aka, the radio or something not working. I know when I replaced batterys in my s2000's I had to put in the radio code or it wouldn't work and half my s2000's didn't have the codes anywhere lol
Alright Gentleman! I had a brand new 800 cca interstate battery installed today and all of my issues went away. The old battery was only a year n a half old but it didn't pull very much amperage. When I turn the car on the "service steering column lock" doesn't show up, sometimes the security light would come on and now it doesn't. My lights don't go dim when I hit the brakes or roll the window up and down. I think the battery has fixed all my issues! lol I have the box to install under the column but I don't think I need it now, they said theyd return it no problems if I figured it out.
