most new tires don't have a catastrophic blow out. What happens is you pick up a nail and start loosing air pressure. you wont know that until its too late. the tire looses air slowly and once it reaches a certain point you will feel it in the steering at that point the tire could come off the rim, drivability could become life threatening. without a spare, and a destroyed tire, you are out 300 or 400 dollars for a new tire..
Now here is what the sensors will do for you. your driving along and pick up a nial, your on the highway doing 70... you don't have blow out because tires today are very strong. Without sensors you drive along until you loose control because the tire might be down to 10 lbs. with sensors, you pick up a nail and drive along for a half hour until the warning on the DIC says Low pressure which is ( 25 psi ) at that point you can safely drive off to the shoulder, pull out your compressor and pump the tires up to 35 psi and continue on your journey for another 15 / 20 / or 30 minutes, with out doing any damage to the tire, run a tire down to 10 psi and all the structural side wall integrity is gone and you will need another 400 dollar tire. If you are 100 miles away from home you can get home because the sensors will tell you you need more air pressure. I recommend that even Z06 owners get sensors in their car. with sensor you can avoid the cost of a tow truck or the grief that goes with a tow company coming with the wrong truck and damage.. and then you are stuck because you have to sign a waiver for damage and if you don't the tow guy wont tow your car. Sensors are important

I have a 2001 that will need tires in about 10,000 miles/2 years. The sensors work fine, but I will be putting new ones in with the next set of tires. You should be able to get a set of 4 for less than $150 from one of the vendors here.
I switched to non-runflats 20,000 miles ago. They are much quieter and smoother riding. I recommend them. When was the last time you had a flat tire?
