TC change, no trans fluid pumping
I have a stock 1997 C5, auto trans. After a lot of reading here I decided to upgrade the diff. gears to 3:42 and TC to a Yank 2800 stall. Went through the whole process to drop TT, trany and diff. Replaced the diff with new one, installed the TC (which I thought was full of fluid), new trans filter and put the car back together again. Then the problem started when trying to install trans fluid. Started the car and tried various methods discussed here on filling the trans.
I first tried the "pull the trans fluid in through the trans cooling line" method. Nothing went into trans, shifting into different gears produced no gear engagement. Reinstalled the cooler lines.
I then tried pumping fluid into tranny pan, started the car and started to add more fluid. Very little fluid was pumped in before it started to overflow out the filler hole. Selected all the gears to fill the system, but nothing.
I was stumped. Thought maybe the TC wasn't engaging the trans pump. Took the whole thing apart again (I'm getting good at this) to check for any stupid mistakes (I'm good at that too) and cound not find anything wrong. TC was engaged and seated all the way in (3 3/16" from bell housing to TC bolt flange).
I'm stumped.
Questions:
1. Could I have damaged anything by not getting fluid pumping and running the car in fighting to get fluid in?
2. Will not having enough fluid in the TC stop the system from pumping up?
Help Please.
Trans has 67k miles. Would you rebuild while it's out and needing a pump replacement?
